Planning to go to an admitted students day with D, she has not yet seen Cornell. Debating between flying and driving. Did parents that have done these days feel it was worth it and could you recommend places to stay? can admitted students do an overnight?

admitted and prospective students can be hosted overnight by current cornell students through the red carpet society.

when my parents come up now, they pick a hotel in neighboring towns/cities (ie: not ithaca, but around a 20-30 min drive away - generally, it's cortland) because it's MUCH cheaper and it's not bad in terms of distance.

did not do admitted students day as we had visited the campus with my d prior to her acceptance. D went up with classmate and they stayed in dorm with friends.
It will probably be more fun for your kid if she can stay in the dorm, so I suggest you contact Red Carpet society ASAP.
Hotel prices in Ithaca are absolutely ridiculous when a college event is scheduled.
So if it is real pricey, Cortland is the next best place to stay. As I had one kid in cornell and one at cortland, I'm familiar with the area. Cortland has a Ramada, Hampton Inn, and country suites. In Ithaca, I liked the marriott cortyard by airport, & Ramada, and Hampton Inn (close to wegmann's- a must go for the uninitiated). But there are a bunch of decent hotels in Ithaca.

Its worth google-ing Ithaca hotels and just seeing what you can find. On Route 13, there’s a strip of chain hotels that are all pretty similar. I highly recommend making the trip for her if she’s trying to make a decision… its difficult and stressful to decide about the next four years of your life through photographs.

currently deciding between cornell and UVA (which she saw over summer) We will go back to see both. Waiting to see what Tuesday brings.

My daughter thought it was worth it. She did not want to stay in the dorm, so she stayed in the motel with me.

Although I have sometimes stayed in the Ramada Inn in Ithaca, I usually stay in Cortland. It’s cheaper. The exception may be at the end of the year, when Cornell move-out coincides with SUNY Cortland’s graduation. At that time, NOTHING is cheap.
