Triple Life

The college that i will be attending just sent me an email saying that this year a majority of the freshmen will be placed into triple dorms. Can anyone who has been in a triple dorm explain the pros/cons of the triple dorm life?

I was in a triple my freshman year, and it really wasn’t that bad. It’s generally more cramped because many triple rooms were originally doubles that were converted to triples (although some schools may have rooms that were designed to be triples originally). In most cases, though, you’re probably going to have three people in a room that’s about the same size as the one’s made for two. But it’s usually not that bad because everyone has different schedules. You’re usually only all there at the same time at night. There’s usually not a lot of privacy or places where you can be alone, but you would have the same problem in a double.

Like with any rooming situation, it really depends on your roommates, though. If you have horrible roommates, it will be a bad experience no matter how many people are in the room. If your roommates are great, then it’ll be fine no matter how many people are in the room.

About the only pro is that at some schools it is cheaper. Just something you have to put up with as a frosh at a lot of schools.

It’s just like @baktrax said: “Like with any rooming situation, it really depends on your roommates, though.
The space might not be the greatest, but with two awesome roommates it won’t be much of a bother. You could also see the opposite: a lot a space, great amenities, but horrible roommates- that wouldn’t be a very enjoyable time.

I’ll throw in a third voice for the roommate sentiment. I’m in a triple right now and will be for next semester to (not sure if any colleges change between semesters, but just in case), and one roommate is awesome while the other is awful. Frankly, I haven’t talked to the awful one in weeks. I openly communicates to our area coordinator that I thought it would be best for all of us if she left for next semester, because apparently they were already in talks about her moving.

I was in a triple my freshman year, with one awesome roommate and one horrible roommate. Really, when it was just me and the awesome roommate in the room there were zero issues, but if the horrible roommate was around the air in the room got a lot more tense and unbearable. Thankfully she only ended up using the room to sleep, for the most part. It was still a terrible time because of that one roommate though.

Space wise, you’ll be cramped in just about any dorm room; there’s just not a ton of space and you’re most likely sharing it. At my school there are some triples that were intended to be doubles, and some that were intended to be triples. I was placed in one that was intended to be a triple, so relatively speaking there weren’t space issues. Now, I was in a suite. Obviously the overall experience will be different if you’re in a traditional dorm setup.
