Triple Q'd

I find myself in a difficult situation now. USNA has been my dream forever, and waiting is extremely difficult. My BGO is very impressed with my commitment and what caliber of a candidate I am. He's been BGO for a little more than 5 years, and told me that I was one of the best young men he has worked with. I went to NASS, have visited USNA, talked to my regional, and they all seem to say the same thing; wait. I was wondering how you find out you Q'd status. I know i passed the CFA and Q'd in my DODMERB, but my BGO seems to be thinking of me higher than I see myself at this point. I got accepted to Cal Poly SLO and have to notify them by Jan. 15th.......still no word from NROTC Scholarship, which I was told I should have already recieved notice on. How can I find out about my Triple Q'd Status, and where should I go from here???? I hate to bore you with my problems, but I don't think I'm the only one in this position, and my Cognressional Interview is comming up...so, any advice could help. Thanks guys,

Usually you will get a letter stating you are fully qualified but it won't come until your file is reviewed by the board. Maybe your BGO can look into this question for you. Good luck!

The academy will send you a letter to tell you if you are qualified. I wouldnt respond to Cal Poly if I was you, I would wait for USNA. I have already received an appointment to USNA so if you want to PM me I can send you my academic stats so you can get an idea of if you are academically qualified.

Hey Sparkleandshine, I'm interested in your academic stats! I'm just a junior at the moment, but I was curious what you have under you belt as far as academics are concerned. If you don't mind, could you PM with your accomplishments? Thanks a lot, and sorry I can't help you Zero, I'm not as far as you are in the admissions process.

zeronegligence,
Waiting is so difficult, especially when you have more free time over winter break. I'm sure you've seen the profile of USNA class of 2009, so you must have an idea if you are competitive academically, e.g., test scores and GPA. Are you currently attending college? If you are, I believe the admissions board wants to see first semester college grades. Congratulations on being accepted to CalPolySLO. I know that school is extremely competitive and many applicants who also apply to the UCs and other CalState schools are turned away from CalPoly, so being accepted there means a lot.
My daughter received a four-year NROTC scholarship to UC Berkeley last year in early March. However, her application was submitted pretty close to the deadline, otherwise she probably would have gotten it earlier.
I would strongly suggest that you accept CalPoly's offer if it's your first alternate. Many service academy candidates with appointments also have a Plan B and have put a deposit on other colleges prior to I-day. We didn't, but many do. Good Luck.

My son had previously gotten a waiver for his eyes, which we received in a letter and he knew he had passed the CFA at summer seminar, so on November 8 when he received a letter saying he had been scholastically qualifed by the admissions board, we surmised that he was triple q'd based on what I had read about this. If I were you I would call USNA and ask to speak to your regional coordinator. He is the one that told us that my son had passed all three things, even before the letter came out.

BTW, Zero, what are your qualifications?

zeronegligence -
Did you get a scholastically qualified letter? Did you check your NROTC scholarship status online? Make sure nothing is missing in that status and that the proper SAT/ACT scores are received by NROTC. Fax or email ANY updates on your EC's and have your guidance counselor FAX any grade/EC's/Sports letters to NROTC and email and mail them to USNA.

Make sure your BGO knows of your acceptances and deadlines and make sure you tell him if you land the NROTC scholarship. Sometimes just getting the regional director up to date on your status can land your file at the top of the board pile.

Anytime you add info to your file at either NROTC or USNA, you get bumped somewhat on your review status and may get the board to move earlier than if you hadn't updated. Also, if you've been working out to improve CFA....retake it and email regional director to reset for your gym teacher..etc. to resubmit your CFA scores.

Anything you do to help NROTC and/or USNA realize the depth of your motivation, will only help speed and positively decide your case!

Good Luck!

And...Yes, use direct contact with your regional director if necessary. But a good BGO should be able to take care of all the communication for you and it is usually even more effective that way.

Zero: on the main CC Board is an important message to those who are being forced to respond ASAP. Please read the notes from Carolyn as they may apply to your CalPoly situation - basically that you can ask for an extension. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=135423 Good luck!

Weski -
Good info! First things first...get that extension! Makes sense, especially since USNA is not direct competition for them normally. Would not think an extension would be an issue at all.

Just curious- why the acceptance deadline of jan 15th- is this ED/EA related? Is an acceptance binding?

Cal Poly is ED. When I filled out all the CSU apps, I was under the impression that all the apps were filled out the same. But, for some reason Cal Poly gave me a notice that I was admitted under the conditional ED. I'm okay with that, it's just I don't want to be binded with SLO, and later find out USNA gives me an appointment. It's pretty hard, and everyone I have talked to is just so impressed I got into Cal Poly, but USNA is my dream. So I'll call my BGO today and talk withhim, then call Cal Poly tomorrow to see what I can do......

zero-

Through MyCalPoly, indicate through the Accept/Decline link that you accept Cal Poly's offer of conditional admission by the appropriate deadline. Once you 'accept,' you are certifying that you understand and agree to these terms and conditions and that you are making a commitment to attend Cal Poly.

Early Decision January 15, 2006

Failure to indicate your acceptance of Cal Poly's offer of conditional admission will result in your admission being cancelled.

Playing devils advocate here, check yes and keep working on USNA. If and when you are totally, and I do mean, totally accepted with reporting papers in hand, call/write to CalPoly and decline. Trust me they have a waiting list. They are not going to sue you. You may lose a deposit, but that's the price you pay. I hate to say that many things can go wrong with a USNA admission, but they can, so keep that option open.

If I do that I'm blowing off NROTC as well as the UC's and USC....Is Cal Poly worth blowing off NROTC at, lets say worst case scenario, SDSU?

zero-

If you accept CalPoly, you are not blowing off NROTC, which according to you has not been offered yet. NROTC scholarships are independent from acceptance to a university. They are granted based on the information/stats you provided in your NROTC application. If you are offered an NROTC scholarship, you respond by their deadline (sometime in the spring). Some USNA candidates who receive late appointments have already accepted NROTC scholarships, which become null and void on I-day if the candidate accepts the appointment. As others have pointed out, an extension at CalPoly would be a good thing to look into.

I understand, unfortunately Cal Poly is not a school that qualifies for the NROTC Scholarship. The school I want to attend with the scholarship is USC. I have interview with USC and with the Battalion soon, so if Cal Poly enforces their policy, USC has not responded to me yet, and they won't for a while. I talked to my BGO today, he said that the board has reviewed my file and finds me fully qualified for an appointment, but has not offered one. So just waiting for now...

zero

very few candidates have received appointments so far. Good Luck. If you got into CalPoly, I would imagine that you are competitive for USC too. NROTC scholarships to USC must be highly sought after considering the steep tuition.
