Triton Transfer Connect

I heard about this event at UCSD's Transfer Student Admit Day, but I just got an official email about it:

Greetings 2008 Transfer Students,

On behalf of Commuter Student Services, the Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools, and the Six Colleges, we want to congratulate you on your decision to attend UC San Diego. We are thrilled to welcome you to our community because so many exciting opportunities await you here at UCSD.

You are cordially invited to attend Triton Transfer Connect (TTC) - it's a great opportunity to make new friends, learn about off-campus housing options, and get an introduction to the world of resources available for our students who commute. Triton Transfer Connect will be held on Saturday, July 12 and Friday, July 18 from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. You are invited to take advantage of the opportunity to get acquainted by attending ONE of these days.

Now in its sixth year, this INTERACTIVE event is FREE and includes:
. a local housing tour and fair
. time to meet potential roommates
. the inside scoop from the perspective of continuing transfer students.

Continental breakfast, lunch, and a Dessert Social are included! This is a student-only event on campus - we invite your parents and friends to sight-see in the San Diego/La Jolla area during the day's program.

Additional information can be found at Triton Transfer Connect. This is the webpage you will use to register for TTC and to create a roommate profile feature exclusively available to new transfer students which allows you to search for potential roommates. To access the roommate profile and to register, you will need to have your active PID. If your PID is inactive, contact Commuter Student Services at 858-534-3670 for access to the website.

Once again, welcome to UC San Diego! Come and enjoy TRITON TRANSFER CONNECT on either July 12 or 18.

Sincerely,

So I was planning on going to both days, just to boost my chances of finding a roommate, but apparently they're not letting us...damn...so have any of you transfer students gotten the email and are you planning on going? What day do you think you're gonna go?

I'm going on the 18th. Should be interesting. The Dark Knight comes out that day prob gonna see it right after this.

I'm going on the 12th. :)

christian bale is the ****ing man

That's true but Heath Ledger is also the ****ing man

bale > all

Ha, you guys still haven't found a place to live? What are you waiting for? Places are going fast, and unless you want to live with 9 other people you need to get started ASAP.

feels smug with his recently acquired condo

there will always be spots -- check facebook community, CL, etc.

a lot of people move away in august/september to start schools elsewhere (i did), there will be another flood of openings in a few weeks.

Oh i'm sure there will be, at higher prices of course. I got a killer rate based almost exclusively on the fact that i picked it up early.

Supply and demand my friend, supply and demand.

What was I waiting for? Apartments to open up...I started looking in May, but most apartments in SD only require a 30 day notice, so they actually tell you to go back in the beginning of August to see if they have spots available. Besides, TTC was a chance to meet friends and find roommates...why would I want to get an apartment without people to share it with?

No need to be smug about it

The wife and I just got a place on the east side of campus, but another place we were looking at is Hillcrest. There's a free shuttle between campus and the Hillcrest medical center, and the rent is a $200-$300 cheaper than La Jolla/UTC.

First time living away from home? I've done the roommate thing, and I've lived alone before, and trust me, there's simply no comparison.

Just wait till you have to deal with getting your roommate's half of the rent.

I started my search mid june and finalized my lease a couple of days ago, just have to show up on the move-in date and pick up the keys.

Keep in mind, this was all based on the advice of folk already at UCSD who kept harping on the fact that apartments become very scarce starting around August, not to mention that rates go up as well. I'm paying 1250 for an apartment that's less than a mile away from school, and within walking distance to restaurants, groceries, and entertainment.

Just to give you an idea, I'm currently playing 1400 for a much smaller place, that's in a "bad" part of Los Angeles. So yeah, the earlier you can lock in your place, the better.

How was transfer connect by the way? I'm curious.

Also, I used to live in Arleta, you coming from CSUN, Mission, Valley, or Pierce?

I was thinking of doing the same KGZ, but I'd probably end up blowing the savings on gas to and fro. Ended up deciding to just bite the bullet and live in La Jolla proper.

Yeah, it's my first time on my own (I'm transferring from Valley, btw) and I can't afford an apartment on my own, so whether I want a roommate or not (which I actually do), I need one.

The event was cool...it actually really helped to meet people...I met a few new friends and exchanged info with them. One of them and I went to look at apartments afterward and we were really close to actually getting it because it was absolutely perfect...we even put down a holding deposit (refundable, of course). There was going to be 3 or 4 of us in the 2 br 2 bath, but earlier today I got a call that they wanted to back out, so I've got some friends, but still no roommate...so close, yet so far...
