Anyone go to Transfer Triton Day?

I unfortunately wasn't able to make it so I wanted to see if anyone here on college confidential did!

If you attended, how was it? what kind of activities did you do? did you get to tour the housing at the village? impressions/thoughts about the campus? I still haven't visited UCSD so I want to learn as much as I can about everyone else's experiences

My daughter and I went and we were pleased. They did a great job with everything we attended. This was her 3rd visit to the campus and we actually got to go inside a couple of the apartments at The Village. She liked what she saw, and feels good there. It was a fun & informative day.

I was quite pleased with the experience! I learned much about my major, did a campus tour, and visited the transfer housing area (The Village). The Village is very hip and modern, in my opinion. They had a game room and a sleek study room with new furniture and the latest Mac desktops. I kinda get a Whole Foods vibe from there, if you know what I mean. The people were very friendly and seemingly a lot more social than you would expect… but I think Triton Eye might have some basis in truth, from what I’ve seen. My only deep regret is that UCLA Bruin Day was on the same day. :expressionless:

Which school did you like best ucla or ucsd?

what did rooms in the village look like? i’m worried us transfers will be stuck in doubles/triples. do the doubles and triples seem comfortable enough for 2-3 people?

I had different impressions of the housing at The Village. I saw a double house in Building 5 (i believe it was 5; it was a 3 story building) and a double house in one of the towers and a triple there as well. The triple looked cramped with all the beds suspended with desks below. It was organized nicely but still it looked cramped. The double in the tower was laid out strangely - in an L shape, but it was definitely roomy for two people. In the 3 story building the double looked nicer imo. It was a regular square room with beds on opposite walls, but there was about 5-6 feet in between them. Definitely roomy, and looked better than the tower room except the nontower house was smaller it seemed. The beds and bathroom were upstairs with the living room and kitchen on the ground floor. In the tower building it was a single layout with everything on the ground floor. The tower looked to have a larger kitchen as well.

Overall it blew my expectations out of the water. I was going into the Village with low expectations, hating the fact all the transfers will be in either a double or triple. I can definitely live in a double having taken the tour, but a triple? Well if it comes to that I’m glad to remember I’m a physics major and won’t be at the house very much.

If you haven’t seen the campus and are sure you’re going to live on campus get a bike and be prepared to use the shuttles. The campus is BIG, and some portions are up hill. I saw very little parking, except the garage by the Village. But don’t expect to use a car to get around or think you’ll be OK walking everywhere.

If you’re in Revelle they are renovating portions of that campus including a new cafeteria, the 24/7 commuter lounge, and various lecture halls. The campus as a whole is older looking, with a little section in the middle that looks like cabins, but it’s a fantastic place with fantastic people. I’ve never met such helpful, competent financial aid counselors, or had an enthusiastic major advisor who wants to help me succeed.

I loved it, and can’t wait to start in the fall!

@panchitus the apartments at the village have two story housing? i always thought it was laid out as one floor with the bedrooms in a hallway breaking off from the kitchen/living room.

also, did anyone manage to get some pictures of the village? i’m curious to see what they look like outside of the photos they have online.

Some of them are laid out as one floor some as stories. If you look at the room maps on The Village website you will see which buildings this happens in, but for the most part it seems that on average most of the apartments are just one story.

Here are some few pictures. I didn’t get pictures of the triple room because the students were in there and I didn’t want to impose on them. First two are from the same apartment, the living room/kitchen is the first floor, bedrooms and bathrooms on top floor. The last three are on the fifth floor of one of the towers. I only took pictures of the single (look how small it is), and super single I believe, and their kitchen. Another thing I should mention is that the apartment with triples had two bathrooms on either side of the house to accommodate the 8 or 9 people living there.

@panchitus thanks! i really appreciate the pictures. maybe i’ll see youin the fall!

@panchitus Actually, I have a friend who had a single during her Freshman year in Sixth college and she told me that the single in the transfer dorms is bigger than what she got, so we’re actually getting a much better deal.

I went from like 2-4ish. I had a final prior to it so I kinda had to rush over to UCSD. I saw what I wanted most to see, though - the housing. The Village is really cool and it seems like I’d definitely be living comfortably should I decide to transfer to UCSD. Also, I was able to get free ice cream which was probably the most notable thing of the day lol (albeit one of the few things I was actually able to do there :P)

@anavera I suppose it depends on how big the bed they give you is. The single I saw in the tower was very small because the bed took most of the room. If it wasn’t a full bed it would have looked roomy.

@redgadget3‌ which college are you in?

do you guys think we’ll get stuck in triples as incoming transfers? and when do we get to start the housing assignment process?

@panchitus i’m in muir! and yourself?

@redgadget3‌ We’ll be in doubles or triples. My tour guide said we have a good chance at being in doubles if we don’t wait to choose rooms. The housing website has a page that outlines the room selection process. I found it through hdh. ucsd. edu /roomselection/details. asp.

I’ve heard a few different processes for room selection, but just make sure to keep checking your UCSD email. We’ll be notified through there.

I’m in Revelle. :)

@panchitus did you get your actual UCSD email yet? or do they not create those for us until after we SIR? cause im still waiting to visit the school after my finals to submit the SIR.

@redgadget3 Yes, I have my UCSD email now. I’m not sure if they’re made before or after the SIR (I SIR’d the week after decisions were posted), but you can check on the myapplication portal down at the bottom. There’s a link to check if your email has been made.
