The only form I need to complete my FA verification is a copy of my parents’ 2016 IRS Tax Return Transcript. I had been trying to get it since late February. At one point a few weeks ago she said she had it but this was not mentioned again.
My sister is a college student and brought a load of stuff home from her dorm this weekend, and she told my mom they had to do her FA forms. Apparently for her they are due May 1st. My mom pulled out the transcript and they finished everything. Then when I asked my mom sent me pictures of the transcript.
I sent it to the FA office at my school and they emailed me back and told me that I sent the 2015 form. I checked, talked to my mom, and she said “we must have ordered one copy from 2015 and one 2016 copy, you have to find it.” I told her I don’t think I ever had it because I am very organized with my paperwork and she said that it’s my responsibility to find it tomorrow or my sister will lose her housing spot.
My mom says she can’t access the form online because she has a hyphen in her last name, and the IRS website says it takes 5-7 calendar days to mail out a transcript. Up to now I have done all of my paperwork and been thorough but I don’t know what to do.
If there is an IRS office near where your mom lives, she can go there in person and ask for a copy of the tax transcript.
You can’t request a copy of your mother’s transcript, she has to do it. If she can’t request it online, she’ll have to send in a request or go to an IRS office.
Thanks everyone, I like to think that I’ve learned a lot about this process but obviously I still have a lot to learn.
My sister had read the wrong date and (as I had thought and told her) doesn’t need the form until June. However my mom has an appointment at our local IRS office on Tuesday. I didn’t even think of the possibility of going to an IRS office, really beating myself up about that one!

@annabanabelle - Lots of people don’t think about just going to the IRS office, and plenty of folks don’t live close enough to one to make that an easy option. So don’t feel bad about not thinking of that on your own. Good luck with this procees. Here’s hoping it all gets sorted out soon!
The hyphen in your mother’s name shouldn’t preclude her from getting her transcript online. Her name just has to be entered exactly as it was on her most recent tax return, along with the address exactly as it appears on the most recent return. Make sure she knows exactly what she needs when she goes for her appointment - and it wouldn’t hurt to ask for a 2017 transcript while she’s there, because you’re probably going to need it next year. Just make sure you have a safe place to keep it.
If I had a nickel for every time someone at the IRS told me I could get what I needed online …
Anyway, @annabanabelle - how could you possibly know that you could go to an IRS office for those things? The IRS actively discourages people from speaking with live people. Don’t beat yourself up over it. Hope everything works out OK.
@annabanabelle did you or your sister work and file a tax return for 2016?
If not, then you might need a verification of nonfiling letter from the IRS.
So you might want to go with your mom to the IRS office.
@Trixy34 if you think dealing with the IRS is bad, try Social Security!
@mommdc We did and already took care of that form, my parents transcript is all we have left.
