Trouble first year in college

Hello!
My first year of college was very rough for me. I attended University of Nevada at Reno and I finished my first year on academic probabtion. I took four classes my first semester, recieving two F’s, one D, and one C.
The next semester I took four classes again and received one F, one D, one C and one B. I returned to my hometown and took 9 units and worked, and received all B’s. I am still enrolled at the university of nevada but am on a leave of absensce. I am taking seventeen units this semester. My question is, from where I stand now, what would the process be in order to transfer to a UC or upper level school out of state? I have had dreams of going to university of Washington. I am a California resident.

Community college first, probably? CA residents can confirm.

So do you think that the credits I have from my past college would help speed the process up? I have just about finished my GE’s up and this semester i am taking two of the classes I failed at my previous school in order to possibly replace them. Sorry for the wall of text

If your credits from UNLV are UC transferable then they would be put towards your 60 semester unit/90 quarter unit minimum required to transfer to a UC. However, your UC GPA needs to be in the 3.0+ range for any chance at the majority of the UC’s so you might need to replace more than the 2 classes.

Here is a link for the UC’s (Transfer UC GPA by major and campus) to give you an idea of what kind of GPA you need to achieve. Also if you are attending a California CC, use assist.org to plan your required transfer courses.

What caused your rough year at UNR and how certain are you that you will not repeat those mistakes at a UC if admitted?

Broke a leg and diagnosed with a mental illness. Quite certain I won’t repeat those mistakes, and although the last three classes I took is a small step I believe it is a step in the right direction.

Like what @bodangles said, I recommend going to community college. By going there, you can spend a portion of time to raise your grades back up. Good luck!

I applaud your resolve.

Given your academic record, UW is probably a long shot. It may also keep you out of most UCs until you re-take those Ds and Fs and have them replaced vs averaged in. (but most schools require you to do that at the same school)

If you don’t hate it there - Reno is probably your quickest path to a degree. You have around 18 successful credits, Your 17 in progress will give you sophomore standing if you return to UNR.
