My son applied as an in state transfer to TOSU (Aviation) Fall 2020 and was denied with a 2.75 as a Freshman. I read that he was within the schools sweet spot, barely, although each school has its own requirements. He is now pushing his GPA up and we expect him to have a 3.0 in time to apply for transfer in the Summer 2021. With all the talk about more spots being available due to COVID, is there any point in him applying for Spring 2021; his GPA will be the same (2.75) since this current semester will not be over before the deadline for application for the Spring. I don’t want to just spend $65 if their “algorithm” says deny 2.75 in aviation.
Should he apply for Spring 2021 anyway, hoping things within the school have changed, or wait and apply for the Summer 2021, or wait to apply for Fall of 2021? I also don’t know if the school likes or dislikes multiple admission attempts.
Thanks
Not sure where you heard that there are more spots open due to COVID, but this year’s freshmen class is substantially larger than last years’ class. Likely out of concern for COVID losses, tOSU accepted about one-third more freshmen applicants than the prior year but their yield rate was higher than excepted. So the class of 2024 is huge. Aviation is a tiny program but it too has more freshmen this year.
That being said, who knows how much melt there will be as this class continues on. tOSU doesnt know either, which is why I think I would wait for Fall, 2021 transfer. At that point, they’ll have a better idea of the number of returning students. Freshmen and sophomores are normally required to live on campus, so they have to manage class size to some degree for that reason alone. I am sure your son Is anxious to get this settled, and I have no clue if repeated transfer attempts are a good or bad thing (is probably neutral), but mainly because of the uncertainty, I would wait as I suspect the uncertainty will have settled down by next summer.
It is anyone’s guess on how admissions at any college will roll in the next year or so. It’s tough to beat the value at tOSU, especially for a preprofessional program like Aviation. So tOSU might be flooded with apps this Fall. Or, not, because of a weak economy. My instincts say best to focus on getting that GPA up and present a great transfer app for fall of 21. tOSU takes its public service mission very seriously and it loves instate transfers, so I’m pretty sure eventually this will work out for him. Good luck!!!
The Marion regional campus was down in total enrollment this fall. Has he considered transferring to a regional campus first to gain university admission? I’d be more concerned about managing a gpa that will be competitive for the application to aviation major even if he is accepted to the university.

"All students entering Ohio State in the College of Engineering enroll in the Pre-Major Program, enabling students to explore our 14 majors through both their coursework and information sessions. As pre-majors, students will:
·complete foundational coursework that includes the Fundamental of Engineering course sequence, calculus and, for most majors, physics and/or chemistry.
·engage with faculty, academic advisors and peers to explore options, and learn how several engineering majors can lead to similar career outcomes.
·select and apply to three majors of interest during the semester that eligibility courses are completed, which can occur during the second semester of enrollment or during the second year.
Applicants to the major program are evaluated on academic performance as demonstrated by their cumulative GPA, along with their response to three essay questions." https://advising.engineering.osu.edu/prospective-students/pre-major-program
Kent State also has a good aviation program.
