Do students still bring trunks to school? I know some students use them for furniture in the room and lock some private things away. I am wondering if a trunk is a good idea for a student in Tilton Hall at Tufts. Thanks for the help.

Probably not.

My son was in Tilton last year - while he enjoyed the sense of community in the dorm, the rooms are definitely on the smallish side - particularly if you are in one of the "hundred" rooms off the central area (room #100, #200, #300, #400). Space is tight. I'd also recommend bringing a box type fan - especially if you're on the 4th floor. And prepare yourself for the move in to Tilton if you're on an upper floor - there's no elevator!

I suggest soft luggage, or better yet, bags.

Don't mean to make the dorm sound dismal, but it is definately a week link in the Tufts chain. On another note, my son absolutely LOVES everything about Tufts and can't wait to get back. His one complaint this past year is that his freshman year went by too quickly!

Good luck during the coming year!

Thanks for the info. Just one other question...Why do you say a box fan instead of just a regular fan? Is it for the size of the room?

No lol, my s and his room mate actually had two fans - one box, one regular desktop, but they were on the top floor and it got pretty warm!

went to Tufts for four years; saw a few trunks but not many. I wouldn't bother. A safe to hold a few valuables (ie money, passport, credit cards, etc) is probably a good idea.

My daughter had a single in Lewis last year as a freshman. She brought a trunk with wheels on one end (purchased at B&B) that she kept at the foot of her bed. She found it handy to store extra sheets and towels and it could be locked if she wanted to put anything of value in it. She dragged it out to use as a table if needed or for extra seating. There really wasn't much space in the room but she thought the trunk had multiple purposes.

I think she will return with it.

on the same idea, have many people had experiences of things being stolen from their dorm rooms? i'm leaving in 2 days for a pre-orientation, so i dont have much time to buy anything else but i'll be arriving with a new laptop, cellphone and possibly some crucial documents... should i be worried?

It's rare to have anything stolen from your room if you lock your door (in fact, I don't think I've heard of a breakin yet?), which RA's will remind all first years to do a lot. If you leave the room unlocked, you're basically hoping no one gets the bright idea to randomly doors - which does rarely happen. I recommend a small box safe or one of those fireproof safe-suitcase things for passports/important documents.

I've never seen anyone have a trunk, but under the bed plastic storage boxes can be really great for holding linens and extra clothing. Since beds can go up pretty high, you can store a lot of stuff that way.
