My S is applying to HWS and also as a Trustee Scholar. He sent in his essay and is now scheduled for an interview... I think by internet? I'm quite sure how that works. We live in CA so it too far to travel. He has not visited HWS for the same reason but he has researched it a lot and sounds like the great fit for what he wants in a school, both academically and socially. He intends to major in Environmental Science to study sustainability and then go on to med school to become a wilderness ER doctor.

My question, does anyone know what the interview will be like since it is not in person? What are some of the stats needed for the Trustee Scholarship? is it purely stat driven or do they look at other things. I am hoping his geography should help a little:-)) He has 2190 SAT's and 3.5 GPA at a top private prep school. He spent a semester at a small boarding school in on a rural organic farm to study organic farming. There has been no one from his school that has applied to HWS in the past, so it is hard to judge how he will do. He wrote a great essay to HWS and another one for the Trustee. I am really hoping this school will become a reality. It seems to be an amazing and special place. We do need $$ though.

With those stats and such an interesting connection to his academic interests, your son sounds like a great candidate for the Trustee Scholarship.

How did you hear about the interview? My D just submitted her Trustee app on the last day (Jan 15), so it’s probably too soon for her to get a response. But, I’m curious about the lag time between your son’s submission and when he was contacted.

DougBetsy… I had my S call the admissions office and request an interview. Because we live so far away I wanted to find out how they were going to conduct the interview. The admissions office gave him a person to email and he did. She got back to him yesterday and I think they are going to talk on Friday. I was just wondering what the interview would be like. He has done quite a few so far for various other schools he has applied to, but don’t know if this one wil be the same type of interview or something different.

Oh, I see. The Trustee process requires an admissions interview. Got it. It’s not a separate Trustee interview.

My D had her admissions interview in person in June. It was scheduled for 30 mins, but ended up going 45. She said it was one of her favorite interviews because she met with an Admission rep, not with a student. She didn’t say it was particulary difficult or stressful. Most of the “usual” questions.

5boys, with your son’s stats, I don’t think there’s any problem with your son being admitted to HWS and I think he has an excellent prospect of receiving a Trustee scholarship. I really can’t tell you if the interview is significantly different from the typical admissions interview. If he’s already had some interviews for other schools, then I’m sure he’ll be just fine. Good luck tomorrow! Let us know how it goes.

5boys, my DD’s interview was in person, so I can’t be of much help on that front. It was one of her first interviews, and didn’t seem much different from her other interviews (although it was with someone from admissions, unlike some of her others). I would imagine the Skype version is not too different from the in person interview. Your DS sounds like a great fit for HWS, and a Trustee scholarship. My DD is a freshman Trustee Scholar and could not be happier. Feel free to PM me if you have specific scholarship questions.

My son did his interview when he visited HWS. He said it was not stressful at all. He had very good stats and wrote a wonderful essay (he’s a writer). He is a very happy freshman at Hobart and a Trustee Scholar.

Thanks SO much everyone!! My S had his skype interview last Friday and he said he went brilliantly… over an hour, she did bring up a question about how a SO CAL boy would handle the winters at HWS, but he came right back saying that he spent his last semester Junior year at a school in VT… so he is fine with the weather… in fact his Trustee essay was about. " Why a southern CA beach boy wants to go to HWS"… The thing about my S is that HWS is a perfect fit for him… he wants to major in ES and study sustainability and then go on to med school to be a rural ER doc… he loves small classes and being able to have close relationships with professors… I hope the Trustee comes through, but he will be happy to be accepted…

Does anyone know when the Trustees scholarship applicants find out?

Hello 5boys! HWS is one of my daughter’s top choices and we have visited at least five times over the past year (we are actually going this Saturday). One of her closest friends applied ED and will be attending this fall. My oldest daughter had three friends who graduated last year and they all LOVED it. Said they had great career services and internship opportunities. Another friend had THREE sons who attended… one is in Dental School, one is getting a Master’s, and one is a current student. Another family I know has two boys there (athletes). Everyone I have spoken to - students, former students, and parents all have had only positive comments about the school. The campus is very pretty and the lake is spectacular.

5boys, my son loves Hobart. He joined a few organizations and enjoys them. He likes the classes and professors. He made dean’s list for fall semester. He is challenged by the classes but not overwhelmed. It has been a nice balance.
PM me if you need anything answered

WOW!! That is a great endorsement greggles!!! Sounds like it is a great school in every way, which is kind of what I already thought. Boomer… I will pm you I’m sure if he ends up with the Trustee. I am really happy everyone seems to be having such a great experience.

I’m impressed, Greggles; you have all kinds of connections to HWS! That’s very reassuring for people who can’t visit.

5boys, I’m delighted your son had such a successful interview–very encouraging. My son’s girlfriend is one of the two Blackwell Scholars from last year so she has a free ride for all four years to HWS and she’s automatically admitted to the Med School at SUNY-Syracuse. She is from a rural part of upstate NY, so that’s how she qualified. Were you aware of this arrangement? She’s very enthusiastic about the pre-med opportunities at HWS.

Oops, I just saw that the application deadline was January 1st, so it’s too late for your son, but I think I’ll keep the post for others to be aware of for the future. Good luck to your son, 5boys!

Thanks Carolyn! Yes, I did see all about Hobart’s med school rate and also the early assurance program that they offer. We don’t come from a rural area so I didn’t think my S would have qualified for the Blackwell. Ironically he does want to ultimately become a rural ER physician. He is also very interested in the Humanities early assurance program. If your goal is to go to med school you really can’t beat Hobart. Hopefully we will know something soon on the Trustee. Will keep you posted!!

Carolyn… on the website under med school info there is an early assurance program for kids who want to major in Humanities with Mount Sinai?sp… You take some classes over one summer but you don’t have to take all the other required pre-med classes… I don’t think you have to take the MCAT"s either… it does say that to be the most competitive to get into the program you had to have SAT’s around 1450 CR/M, which my S does, anyway, I don’t remember exactly but I just printed it out a few weeks ago for my S to read. He was VERY interested.

As a parent of a HWS alum I can say that HWS does in fact have a great career service office and wonderful internship opportunities. My son was able to work in the HWS Summer Research Internship Program and given free housing on campus along with an excellent stipend. Another summer he was offered a connection with an alum who worked for the USGS and who offered him a nice summer position. The staff in Career Svc Center work very hard and if your student pursues the ideas and leads they help him find, they will succeed. My son had a successful admission to Grad School thanks in part to the Career Svc Center who helped him with apps and necessary paperwork. He went back to visit some old friends recently and the staff, even Security shook his hand and welcomed him back to campus. It made him feel a part of something. My husband and I look back at his experience there and am very happy with the outcome. My son now jokes that Grad School is somewhat easier than HWS because he had to learn HOW to do the research and HOW to do the write ups. In grad school he feels very comfortable doing that now without any hesitation. He applied for the Trustee Sch but did not get it, but was given an equally impressive grant from the school so it equaled out.
