trying to convince my parents to let me transfer to an out of state uni?

SAYING THIS BC I KNOW THERE WILL BE SOMEONE THAT WILL SAY THIS. I am NOT wanting to transfer just because my friend is going there too. also this post is kinda all over the place so i apologize.

i’m from nyc and i currently go to nyit in manhattan. my current major is architectural technology with a concentration in construction management. my best friend is transferring to arizona state university and she convinced me to apply too and i got in. still waiting for my financial aid package. i have wanted to transfer out ever since i started at my school but i guess i thought i would tolerate it for four years. i also didn’t think of out-of-state (and city) as a possibility for schools, which is also why i never did anything about wanting to transfer. the only school in nyc that offers construction management as a major is pratt, and with $40k tuition, i definitely can’t afford it.

the thing is, my school makes everyone in the school of architecture take studio classes, even if you’re not planning on majoring architecture. asu offers construction management as a major, not just a concentration like at my school. it is also one of the top 3 CM programs in the US.

however, arizona is a 6 hour flight from nyc and it will be my first time away from home for longer than 2 weeks. my parents are also very iffy about it because of tuition. i’ve made pro and con lists for both schools and tried to make my argument but it seems that the one thing that will get me out of nyit and into asu will be if i get a killer financial aid package, since my dad is paying for tuition. i’ll be applying for as many scholarships as i can but i’m still scared that i won’t get enough financial aid. out of state tuition is already cheaper than my current school’s tuition since asu is public and nyit is private.

is there any other way to convince my parents that i will benefit so much more educationally in asu and convince to let me go?

The conversation starts and ends with finances: what can you & your family actually afford? In the middle are the reasons why it is worth doing. No matter how great another program is, if it isn’t affordable it’s a non-starter. So: #s first.

In the meantime, do some more homework: what other places have good CM programs? what are the transfer requirements? how affordable are they? The fact that you only looked at the one your friend is going to say to parents ‘I thought it would be cool to do this with my friend’ not ‘I have done some serious, mature research’.

Remember also that if you are in first year you can still transfer next year.

Are there any SUNY schools that offer your major? They would be “away from the city” and a whole lot cheaper-- and closer-- than Arizona.

If you are waiting on transfer FA, for a non-resident, it may be limited.

As a parent, paying huge fees within our state’s university systems, it does affect how we view where you go and what we can take out of the home budget.

The distance is a day, or less, of travel. That isn’t the issue. It’s the overall cost of having to pay for you to travel on Southwest, during breaks and during expensive holiday seasons. Also, you need supplies that add weight to your luggage, so your parents would either have to ship, or have to buy onsite (bedding, etc.). I guess you don’t see those issues yet.

I agree that SUNY schools are a good alternative.

@collegemom3717 i’m actually finishing my second year this year. and i did look at others. my parents prefer it more that my friend is there too because they enjoy having her around and they’d rather me be in a different state with someone they know and that i’m close to, and not alone.

my friend is an international student so when she moves there, she will live in AZ. my stuff will stay at her place. flights cost about $200 to $300 for a round trip. my brother went to college in indiana. round trip flights cost about the same price. my parents have flown down there and back multiple times, along with my brother flying back for breaks and other reasons. they bought new things in stores nearby. so no @“aunt bea” you’re completely wrong in assuming that i haven’t seen these issues yet.

@bjkmom some sunys have construction management programs but they are nowhere near the best. i don’t want to waste my time in anymore subpar programs. i have to pay full price for sunys and i do not qualify for tap.

I thought you needed FA.
If your parents are flying back and forth for your brother and purchasing things onsite, then FA shouldn’t be an issue for your family. Which means you should be full pay and probably won’t qualify for FA.

Full price at SUNY is $23,000 including room and board. All are within driving distance from NYC.

And I’m not at all sure how you arrived at “subpar.”

If you actually do get a net price at ASU that is significantly lower (after considering travel costs), then that may be the most convincing argument.

But you are unlikely to convince them if ASU is more expensive.

If finances are the issue, then wait for the aid letter. Once you get it, do a spreadsheet. Show the full costs of NYIT on one side, and of ASU on tthe other. Then subtract all non-loan financial aid to see how much each school will cost you in loans. If ASU is cheaper, that’s your argument.
