My daughter is interested in actuarial science, but still wants to keep her options option and go the business school route. Her top picks are in state Rutgers and Clemson. Rutgers would be cheaper, but she did get merit and FA from Clemson putting it $7000 more than Rutgers, and git into honors. Although Rutgers says that students will need to be vaccinated to attend, they have not stated that they will be opening up completely (right now they are virtual with a small percentage of students on campus). Clemson should be more open. Off campus housing is significantly less expensive at Clemson. My 18 year old son has decided on Rutgers, my husband and oldest daughter are graduates. We are going to try to get down to Clemson this month. Clemson is a 12 hour drive, Rutgers 45 minutes (or an easy inexpensive commuter train ride).
Although I would much prefer the Clemson campus and environment, the NY orientation of Rutgers probably makes it stronger for internships and employment. They are pretty much a toss-up, so pick the one you prefer. No right answer.
That’s one if my biggest concerns, she really wants to stay in the NYC metro area after graduation, she says she saw NJ/NY internships on Clemsons website, but I’m sure there are much fewer options. My daughter had no problem finding internships and a job after graduating from Rutgers. I think Clemson’s campus and weather will be more enticing than New Brunswick.
Sounds like she likes Clemson best and they offer more than Rutgers, so while there’s no wrong choice, I think she should try Clemson, keeping in mind she’ll need to be on top of things for internships.
I am from NYC, but I have been living in Atlanta for 10 years. My daughter will be going to Clemson this year as a freshman. It is a fantastic school and the school spirit is second to none. I don’t think she’ll have a problem getting an internship from either school, but at Clemson she will find the nicest people she will ever meet. She will love the weather and the family atmosphere.
Just an update, my daughter chose Clemson and she’s so excited. One of my best friend’s daughters had to make the same choice, at first chose Rutgers just because it made sense (closer, cheaper, probably easier to get internships), but her heart wasn’t there, so she’s the other student from our town going. Rutgers and Clemson have such different academic schedules that my daughter will be able to visit her twin and friends at Rutgers many weeks out of the year.
