Clemson vs Binghamton, OOS vs InS

I am really having trouble deciding which school to attend for the fall semester of 2016. I am currently accepted into both Suny Binghamton ( In state ) and Clemson University (OOS). I will be majoring in Finance at either institution and would like to know which school would you recommend for this, how likely I am to come out with a job, ect. Also, the cost of the institutions plays a very small part on my decision simply because I am lucky enough to only have to pay for my last year. It will be a difference of ~$20,000 extra if i decided to go to Clemson. Also, I visited Clemson and absolutely loved the campus but worry about going to a college where I know no one. But Binghamton I have visited many times, couldn’t really care for the place nor campus but I have current friends and hear there Finance program is phenomenal. Please respond because I’m having an extreme amount of trouble on deciding.

bump

Unless you want to live in the south after graduation, I would not pay 20k more for Clemson. If Clemson were free maybe. What do you mean you only pay for one year? Who is paying the other years. Are you admitted to Bing’s business school?

Clemson. Although Bing is stronger academically, you’ll have more of a real college experience (at least in comparison) at Clemson. Clemson is also a strong school academically in its own right. Also, don’t be afraid of going to a faraway school where you don’t know anyone. That’s what I did, and I’ve been able to branch out in ways that would have been unimaginable had I stayed close to home. You’d have a great time at Clemson

While I am not familiar with Clemson, I know many people that attend Binghamton and have visited it and about a dozen other colleges. A number of my firend’s kids belong to frats and so forth. I am not sure how Clemson provides more of a REAL college experience. Bing is pretty real. The people make your college experience, not the buildings. If you had more time I would suggest doing an overnight at Clemson to see if you are comfortable. If you want rah rah football and that is your priority over everything else including academics then perhaps Clemson.

@SeekingPam just because Clemson is a big football school, doesn’t mean that there are no students who take academics seriously.

Always Bing students/parents with those attitudes lol

Not in state for Bing! Not a Bing parent, visited on way to Syracuse!

However, I do have many many friends in New York whose kids went to Bing (my kids did not go there because it does not make sense for us financially). Everyone seems really happy there. It is a very downstate school and if that is what you are trying to get away from then perhaps look elsewhere. However, Clemson seems very different although I have not visited (so take my comments with that).

OP has not really articulated good reasons for preferring Clemson other than the campus is nicer! He says he has friends at Bing. Is he a direct admit to the business school? IDK. When he visited Clemson did he connect with the students? Is he comfortable with the Clemson social media groups he has joined? IDK he did not say.

As far as a typical college experience, if he was asking about a CUNY school or one of the SUNYs where everyone goes home on weekends or Montclaire State for example in New Jersey then I would say that Clemson will give him more of a typical college experience but since Bing is at least 3 hours away from most of Downstate, most people stay the weekends, join frats and do all of the typical college activities. As far as I can tell the only advantage of Clemson is if OP wants to stay in the south or likes warm weather or wants to start fresh in a new place where no one knows him.

OP, with a little digging you will find that LBad96 is a Binghamton hater. If you look back you will see that he jumps in to every thread comparing Binghamton to other schools and he ALWAYS recommends the other school - regardless of price. Look a little further back and you will discover that he has never been to Binghamton. Look all the way back and you will find that he was rejected by Binghamton.

His thoughtless opinions are old and tiresome. It’s been suggested several times to him to stop, yet he continues. Always take his advice with caution.

Your decision should be based on help from people with direct experience with either Clemson or Binghamton.

Best of luck!

@STEM2017 LOL. it’s hilarious how often you all assume that I “hate” Binghamton. Absolutely hilarious. I wouldn’t waste my time hating any school. I would recommend Binghamton over schools such as Rutgers or Bama or Ole Miss, FWIW.

@stem2017 I agree that the OP should get help from people that have direct experience from Clemson. I would never speak about Bing because I have never been there and I make it my general policy to speak for or against a school I have little to now knowledge about. I suggest that the OP look at the Common Data Set for both schools to get objective data regarding stats of students admitted to the programs . Clemson has a strong engineering program. Clemson has the number one ranked career placement department in the country. They have a huge alumnae network that is not isolated to the South . There are many benefits to attending Clemson other than “rah rah football” and “the weather”. The data is there if people bother to look at it to make an informed decision .

Thanks guys this has helped a ton. To answer the question of how I am only paying for the last year, my parents are divorced and my mother and father have decided to pay for the first two years I go away, and I will pay for the last (only 3 years because I’m a transfer student who did 1 year at my current college). Right now I am admitted to the Harpur School at binghamton and will have to transfer into there School of Management, but accepted into Clemsons Financial Management program. And If I go to Binghamton If i do not maintain a 3.5gpa or above (which i heard is tough to do at Binghamton) I will have to major in financial economics rather than there SOM Finance Program, which I’m really not a fan of. Still deciding but this has really helped a lot and if anyone else has any more inside information please let me know. Thanks Guys!

If you have to try to transfer into a university’s B-school, it’s absolutely not worth it at all. Too much headache and stress trying to achieve a certain GPA when you can get a comparable (if not better) education elsewhere. Clemson has given you direct admission. Take this chance you’ve been afforded and run with it.

Thank you very much @LBad96 for the insight on what to do, you’ve helped my decision a ton!

How easy will it be to transfer into the School of Management? This is a hard program to gain acceptance into.

@twogirls OP needs a 3.5+ to transfer into the SOM.

Is the School of Management at Bing a guaranteed acceptance with a 3.5? My friend’s daughter got into Harper straight out of HS with the intention of transferring into the SOM and did not make it. I do not know what her gpa was at Binghamton but she ended up transferring out of Binghamton into another business school.

I just looked at the website and an internal transfer into the SOM is very competitive. There is no minimum gpa requirement but it states that most students have a 3.5 or higher. I did not get the impression that having a 3.5 will guarantee acceptance, but I could be wrong.

I am leaning towards Clemson because you are a direct entry into the school that you want to be in. You will have to decide which school vibe you like better (both are different) and whether not knowing anybody at first will be a negative for you. You should know that many students go away without knowing anybody and after a period of transition, they do just fine.

Clemson grad ('13) here who transferred from The University of Vermont (home state). My short answer is that going to Clemson was one of the best life decisions I’ve ever made, and most everyone I met there had a similar opinion (Princeton Review ranks Clemson #7 for happiest students). To go a little more in-depth, Clemson is ranked higher for academics by both PR and U.S. News, it’s located 2 hours from two major financial centers – Charlotte and Atlanta, the campus and surrounding countryside is phenomenally beautiful, and going to your first football game on Saturday will make your head explode. Just be prepared to change your shirt multiple times a day for the first few weeks as your body acclimates to the million-percent humidity.
