Trying to make a final decision. Fordham vs. Johns Hopkins

I'm thinking about majoring in biology (not looking to go into Med-school as of now however), but even if I do not, I will major in either engineering or another natural science. If I go to Fordham, I have a full tuition scholarship, and though I plan on dorming for the first couple of years, am close enough to travel there to eliminate room and board costs if I so choose. At JHU, I will have to pay about 3.5k in federal (substantiated) loans and take out another 5k in private loans, as well as do work study. Normally I would definitely choose Hopkins, but a full tuition scholarship would be hard to pass up. I am also a bit worried about how it will be dealing with both classwork and working during the week (and I may run track there as well) at Hopkins.
Anyways, rant over, I would greatly appreciate any advice.

If you lived on-campus at Fordham for all 4 years, it would come out to roughly the same cost as Hopkins, so I would recommend Hopkins. Also, Hopkins has a better program, MUCH better location, nicer campus, better environment, better resources, etc.

Just want to clarify, at Fordham, my mother will cover any room and board costs anyways. At Hopkins, the straight cost is 25,000 (that includes 3,500 in federal sub. loan and 2500 in work study) and I will likely need to take an additional 5,000 in private to cover the gap.

So your mother will be covering part of Hopkins and leaving the rest to you? But will be covering all of the remaining costs at Fordham?

That is correct.

Dude sounds like Fordham it is. That’s too bad - but full tuition is a good deal.

any other opinions?

It’s hard to justify spending some $35,000 to go to Hopkins when you could go to Fordham for free.

However, it’s up to you as to which you would like to go.

Through the Stafford Loan program you can borrow a total of 5,500 your freshman year, 6,500 sophomore, 7,500 junior, and 7,500 senior. If your college awards some of that amount as a subsidized loan, you can get the rest as an unsubsidized loan. Beyond that, you will need a co-signer for any private loans. If your mom isn’t in a position to co-sign (or isn’t willing to), then those private loans will be impossible. Which will probably take JHU right off the table.

Fordham is fine educational institution, and has offered you the chance to graduate debt free. That is a truly wonderful thing! Go to Fordham, do well there, don’t ever look back.

Wishing you all the best!
