I currently attend Oxford College of Emory University in Georgia. It sucks. I want to transfer as quickly as possible to UCLA because thats the only school equivalent in prestige and academics. Im a rising sophomore and I didnt apply this last year which means I'd have to go back to "that place" for another year =(. Instead, I was wondering if I could go to a community college for a year and then transfer to UCLA. Would they rate the year at Emory very much? ALso will it affect my competitiveness after college much since I went to community college for a year?

YOu might need to know my gpa at Emory is 2.7 o.O

Yeah it is kinda weird. Anyway, does anyone have any advice for me?? I feel lost here. Idk whether to stay and tough it out another year and then check out the main campus or get out now before too much money is sucked in. The thing is what I want to do after college has no need for that special "degree" from Emory. I want to be a Marine Officer for a while, then after that probably law enforcement. At the same time I know if I ever want to get a job at some corporation (such as Coca Cola for example) that Emory will shoot me up the corporate ladder. I really need some outside advice other than just my mom saying Emory, Emory, Emory...lol. Shes the one that talked me into going to Oxford in the first place.....

This situation is difficult to understand without more information. In general, I cannot think of a reason why you would go from a school like Emory to a community college, and then try to transfer from there, It just doesn't make sense.

Are you talking from an intellectual standpoint? Because in that case I dont really care, although I would not want the CC to affect my chances at getting a job after college.

THere really is nothing more to it than me being dissapointed with my school and wanting to move back to the west coast. Money is not a factor in my parents eyes although I feel that it should be if I can get the same education at UCLA while having it be cheaper. BTW, Im a business major.

Definitely not from an intellectual standpoint. For your own enrichment you could just study at home.

You mentioned wanting to perhaps transfer, and I thought it would be easier straight from Emory than through a CC. I just don't feel that I have a lot of information about your situation as your post was brief. From what I do know, leaving Emory to go to a CC before someplace else can send up a red flag about your ability to stick something out. At the very least people will question it I would guess. I think UCLA is a tough school to get into, and for that reason you should keep your file as competitive as possible. A CC is a big step down in prestige from Emory (not that I think it should be that way, but it just is).

As far as the future goes, employers will want to know which colleges you have attended, and that same red flag will possibly go up again. The cleaner and simpler your resume is, the fewer questions raised. It isn't that a red flag always represents something substantial, it's just that it causes one to pause and consider and think. Red flags are not as desirable as an absence of red flags.
