Tufts is my #2 choice. Can I get in though?

Female
Asian (Indian)
MA
Competitive public high school (sends many to top schools including Ivys)

Cumulative GPA: 3.8 unweighted. No idea what it is weighted.

All Honors and/or AP classes...and this means 3 AP classes total. I know that's a shocker to some of you, but my school doesn't offer very many at all. This won't hurt me, right?

Rank: Top 5%

SAT (superscore):
CR-640
M- 660
W- 740 with a 12 on the essay
---->2040
I'm not the strongest test-taker, but hopefull they'll look past this?

SAT IIs: Bio-630...Math II-taking in Nov.

ECs: Please note that I moved and therefore switched schools after my freshman year. There many seem a slight inconsistency in some activities because of this.
*
Speech& Debate Team (9th)*
-Went to many competitions and won numerous awards even on the state level. Could not continue because it was not available at my new school.
Violin
-Have been playing for 8 years, and freshman year played in the Symphony Orchestra.
Model UN (10th-12th)
-Delegate
Yearbook (10th-12th)
-Editor in chief Senior year.
Science Club (11th-12th)
-Vice President
-Serve as a mentor for elementary school kids and help them conduct research at the vernal pool.
-Also set up many other fundraisers and events.
PEER Leaders (11th-12th)
-Community leaders from the school.
-We do various community service and help around the school.

Community Service (about 200+ hours):
-Elks Lodge (over 50 hours)
-Pediatric Doctors Office (about 30 hours)
-Local Hospital (about 50+ hours)
-Various other events including Special Olympics, Soup Kitchens, Church...etc

Other Stuff:
-Did some research in a Genetics Lab at URI. Did everything from PCR to Extracting DNA to helping with a primer design. Research wasn't published or anything, but spent 6 continuous weeks with countless amount of hours.

-Internined at InCube for a few weeks at the end of this summer. It's a biomedical research company in northern CA. Worked with a cell biologist and chemical engineer to help design and test a device that would be implanted in the spine to reduce pain. Paid internship...if that matters.

-In summer 2006, I went to India and for about 2 weeks and did some community service there. My grandfather lives in a small (rather poor) village, and he also works in a nearby clinic which treats patients from that area. I wored/volunteered at that clinic.

I will most likely pursue something in biology or the medical field.

I'm pretty sure it's a reach, but how much? Has anyone or do you know anyone with similar stats that has gotten in?

Hey sak09
Lol! I'm Indian too and tufts is also my 2 d choice!

I think you have a great shot. Tufts is a lot like brown, looks at the application holistically. Plus I heard they installed some new thing where they try to put less emphasis on the SATs. I also think ut depends wh major tour applying for because if you're applying for IR, which is on of their most popular majors, it will be tough but if its a major that is less competitive you should have an awesome chance

I don't think Tufts admits based on major (other than A&S vs engineering). I'd say your chances are pretty good, but definitely not a lock.

What are the 3 APs? Did you take any of them as a junior and, if so, how did you do on the AP exam?
I think your GPA looks fine and your ECs are strong. Your board scores are quite mediocre for Tufts. As an RD applicant, I think you are competitive; no more, no less.

I took AP Biology as a junior, and right now I am taking AP Calc and AP English.

Thanks for the replies, anyone else with opinions?

What score did you get on the AP Bio exam and which AP Calc are you taking, AB or BC?

I think your shot is pretty good. I don't know much about the academic requirements at Tufts, but based on the fact that you are a minority and have great grades and even better EC's, I think you should get in. Not a lock though.

Good luck with whatever you do. I'm sure you'll be fine judging by your high school career.

Thanks again for your input on my chances at Notre Dame. Really appreciate it

^ Minority? Perhaps, but not an under represented one. Thus, it counts for nada. Sadly :(

^^ I think at Tufts Indians are definitely a minority. If it was BU or Brown, I wouldn't say that's true. But at Tufts def minority and I think you have a really good shot. Good luck.

While Indians are a minority at Tufts (as they are anywhere in this country), neethus is right in that they are definitely not an unrepresented one and that while it obviously wouldn't hurt, being Asian or Indian does not help in college admissions in the way that being another minority might seem to.

^^ Would you say that any other south Asian ethnicities (Let's say Bengali, Pakistani, Cambodian, Burmese, Sri-Lankan, Bhutanese or Vietnamese) would help in the college admission process?

Why is the discrimination against Asian people?

^ No.

Unless you're a refugee.

^ I don't think you can't find so many south Asians out there attending college. When u say about Indians that's understandable. There are so many Indians out there who are going to colleges that u can't even count them but you don't find a lot of people from those ethnic groups. Would you explain that to me please? (Why they aren't other South Asians considered as minorities?) I don't get it. If black, Hispanics are minorities, then so should they.

Go read the affirmative action threads.

That should help you out.

^ Couldn't find anything regarding that International thing on the website.

What international thing... I said the affirmative action thread.

Search "race" in admissions.

I think Tufts will be quite a reach for you, in part because of your SATs. CR and M are traditionally the two most important tests and your scores here are below Tufts' median.

Tufts is extremely SAT score-focused for all but a few URMs, legacies and athletes because of their relativley low ranking against schools whom they consider peers.

While your grades and ECs are quite strong, your overall presentation -- individual of Indian background seeking career in the medical field -- is not unique, especially given this year's flood of applicants. You will know soon.

Good luck.

agreed, tufts would be a high reach for you, they will not overlook your SAT scores. your writing is solid, but you should get your Math & CR to 730+ each you’d have a decent shot early decision, regular decision is a crapshoot. You should also have 700+ on at least two SAT II’s.

I had 2210 total on the SAT I and barely ranked in the top 10% and was denied ED at tufts, so this gives you an idea of how competitive it is.

I’d look at Bates/Colby/Trinity/Lehigh. Your scores are more in their range and they are definitely interested in a more diverse student body.

Screw chances. Decisions are posted in under 30 hours. Good luck all
