My Chances?

Hello...sorry, I know this is cliche, but I wanted yall's expertise.

My ethnicity is Indian (from India); female; Hindu
AFter med school, my dad did a fellowship program from Tufts at St. Elizabeth's Hospital. (I hope he is considered an alumni. Does being related to an alumni increase your chances of being accepted?)

GPA: 98/100
Rank: 33/463-ish (in the top 10% ) Our school is fairly competitive.

SATs: (aren't spectacular but here they are)
M: 680
V: 600
W: 590
Essay: 9/12
SAT II:
Math: 540 (sighs didn't have a functioning calculator)
Biology: 580 (sighs)
I'm planning to retake biology and take US history in April

I have taken the most rigorous courses offered at my school--all IB classes since the 9th grade. I've finished writing the 4,000 word essay required for the IB diploma and I am now working on the community service hours and the other internal assessments for English, Spanish, Chemistry and History. As far as the IB tests, I've only taken one test which was last May. I took the Math Studies/Statistics test and received a 6 out of 7 on it.

Awards:
-I have been a Superintendent Scholar for 7 consecutive semesters. This is given to those who maintain at least a 90 average in all their honors/AP/IB classes and a 95 in non-honors/regular classes.
-Lettered in Academics

Extracurricular activities:
-Piano (for 10 years)
-Cultural and religious functions all year. One of these is the Diwali show that is put on for the Indian community. Diwali is a religous festival which I've been involved in for about 7 years.
-played JV tennis for 2 years
-tabla (type of indian drum) lessons and I LOVE it.
-hip-hop classes (I'm preparing for a recital in May)
-yoga classes
-tutoring for 6th graders
-volunteering at hospital
-volunteering at a local science museum
-community service projects (collecting clothes, toys, etc for orphanges and homeless shelters)
-Vice-president of International Forum (cultural club at school)
-Treasurer of Junior Statesmen of America (debating club)
-committee chairman for National Honor Society
-Attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Boston in 2004

Work experience:
-babysitting

Recommendations: One is awesome! One is decent, but general. And one from my guidance counselor and assistant principal. (wow...I think I sent in 4! Is that too much?)

Essays: The personal statement was good, but I edited a lot of it after I applied early decision for Tufts though. The supplement essays were excellent and the optional essay was good. I also sent a picture.

Please let me know what you think?

Thanks mucho!

Your SATs are kind of low, but I think your grades may be enough to make up for some of it. Your SAT IIs are pretty poor though, and may reflect bad on you if you did especially well in your Bio/Math courses. The amount of community service you have will definetly help you out as well, thats a strong part of what the adcoms emphasize. It's kind of a tossup with your SATs, but otherwise I think your a strong candidate. Why are you taking the subjects again in April though? You'll have your admissions decision by then.

Are you applying ED2? If you are applying regular and you retake the bio and math you should be alright....You have a really high GPA but it may not be as appealing with those low scores. Plus Admission to Tufts in MASS is much harder than out of state. I'd say you have a good shot, with higher test scores (700's), however you are definately in

I'm not applying ED2. I applied ED 1, but my application is deferred. Why is admission to Tufts much harder than out of state? I thought it would be the complete opposite. Also, do you know if Tufts has certain quotas that they have to meet when it comes to selecting students from certain geographic regions? I'm from Texas by the way. Would you happen to know about how many current students are from Texas? I'm just asking because NO ONE here has heard of Tufts until I tell them about how great it is. :)

Oh and thank you so much for your imputs!

A lot of people from Mass apply to Tufts, thus the applicant pool from Mass is much more competitive. About 35 students from Texas currently. Here's the class profile:

http://admissions.tufts.edu/admstat.htm

Hey! Thanks! I couldn't remember where the profile was for the longest time.

I'm from the Boston area. Every year, about 10 kids from my high school apply to Tufts; that's pretty normal for surrounding towns as well. Almost everyone who applies could do the work.

My guess is that Tufts can fill up its entire first-year class with 1400 SAT (old scale) kids from eastern Massachusetts.

They do give preference to two groups of kids: those in Medford and those in Somerville.

Ohh wow. Do they have a preference for those from Texas? :)

howbout milwaukee? midwest? eh? eh?
