Tufts--New England Conservatory

I saw that Tufts has some sort of relationship with the New England Conservatory of Music. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about this ? How does it work? How are the tuition/fees handled?

I think I saw a double degree option. Is that the only way to avail yourself of the opportunities or can one also take individual courses or be in (extracurricular ) ensembles in both institutions?

Are there entrance requirements in the form of an audition for a Tufts CAS student to use this NEC option?

How easy and safe (for a girl) is it to get back and forth from Tufts to the NEC from public transit?

I believe there is a shuttle. However, the dual degree program requires and application/audition to each program separately. My DD has a friend in the program. He spends most of his time on the Tufts campus, but a few days each week primarily at NEC. Music is very strong on the Tufts main campus, so most seem to take their classes and join groups there. Not sure how easy or hard it is to take an NEC class as a Tufts student not in the dual degree program.

Hi @roderick. You can read more on the NEC/Tufts program at <a href=“The College | New England Conservatory”>The College | New England Conservatory.

NEC undergraduates who are not in the dual program can cross-register at Tufts for up to two semesters. Students who are enrolled only at Tufts can cross-register at NEC for music courses not offered at Tufts, but they generally participate only in Tufts ensembles.

Please contact me if you have further questions.
