Thoughts on choosing Tufts or BC? Son coming from Hawaii. Undecided major - bio or econ (maybe pre-med). Wants fun social scene, sports, strong academics. Sister at MIT. Obviously concerned with COVID and impact on freshman year. Neither school has plan for the fall. Large price tag at both for “remote learning.” Could do gap year, but unlikely to be able to travel or get a job with current situation.
I think it might be worth taking a gap year given everything that’s been going on with COVID, but that aside, I would say BC based on what you’ve said you’re looking for in a college. Tufts definitely has more academic prestige than BC, so that is something to consider. However, sports are essentially irrelevant at Tufts. Many people participate in club sports, but Tufts definitely doesn’t foster a ton of school spirit toward sports. I know that sports are big at BC. I’m not sure about the social scene at BC, but the social scene at Tufts is okay (there are parties every weekend but sometimes they can be kinda lame since Greek Life isn’t big there). I also think if you’re a more religious person, then BC is nice because religion is definitely a big part of the school’s identity, and Tufts is pretty secular. Ultimately, they’re both great universities, and I think that it’s great that you’re really thinking about this decision. Even though they’re both great schools, they do offer drastically different undergraduate experiences, so it’s important to figure out which one will be a better fit for you. Good luck!
@limelight86 there’s no Greek life at Boston College either.
The Forbes 2019 best colleges that mix’s LACs and RUs in one combined super list which is a good list imho. Tufts is 34 and BC is 41.
Academics are a wash for me. Period
OP.
I know so many grads of both schools. Literally dozens, there’s no discernible difference academically at all. They are both really rigorous.
I would say the BC alumni network is stronger locally and especially in business circles. But that might be sports related.
Tufts is fantastic of course.
But based on your specific student’s wish list the choice would be clear for me. It seems fairly straightforward based on your previous posts
OP. Bias alert as I am a BC P22 but I really don’t have an ax to grind.
I would just as easily suggest tufts with a different fact pattern in a second. One wouldn’t second guess choosing either in a heartbeat.
