Tufts Physics major + Russian=recipe for no social life?

Hiya guys!

So at Tufts I have to meet a language requirement. I took Spanish in high school, but had truly awful teachers and even though I always got A's, it never really meant much because the workload was kind of baby-ish. Anyway, I didn't like Spanish and don't want to study it in college. My dad grandfather speaks fluent Russian though, and I always loved the sound of it for some reason. I'm seriously considering taking Russian to meet the language requirement (even though I would have to start learning the language from scratch), but I'm also planning on majoring in Applied Physics. I realize Russian is one of the most difficult languages for English-speakers to learn.

My question is; would the Russian+physics workload be near-impossible? Would I exist solely within the confines of the Tufts library? Or would I still be able to have a social life?

Any thoughts/opinions are much appreciated :) Thanks in advance guys!!

Are you a rising freshmen? I would expect your first year to be heavy on general requirements, not major-specific classes.

yup I’m a rising Freshmen, but the language I decide to take Freshman year I will likely be taking all four years. I’m thinking down the road, even next year, would the workload be near unmanageable if I’m starting a difficult language from scratch in addition to applied physics?

At any school, if you can manage your time and your schedule you will be fine. The people who complain about not having time are the people sit around in the library all day but get side tracked and don’t get anything accomplished, or extreme procrastinators. Remember, you can choose courses and professors based on what you think is manageable. I don’t remember what the course requirements are at Tufts, but if you mix in some other courses that you enjoy with some math-heavy courses, that will make your life more enjoyable.

In short, don’t stress. Be disciplined yet feel free to let loose once in a while. Good luck

thank you for your thoughtful comment. Makes me feel better about the decision.
