Tufts v. William & Mary v. Mount Holyoke

for bio and English...

MoHo is still in because I love the vibe of the school. Between all three I'm interested in the strength of biology especially, post-grad opportunities, strength of the alumni network, and how cooperative, friendly and diverse the student body is. Thoughts??

Mount Holyoke is a great school, and if you don’t mind its single sex nature, it has a lot to offer.

First, studying biology at each of the schools will be different. At Tufts and, I imagine, at William & Mary, primarily due to size, many lower level biology courses will be designed to weed students out (i.e. limit the number of pre-med students). This will be less the case at MoHo, where classes will be smaller, and, I think, instructors will be more encouraging. Of the three, for example, if my heart was set on going to medical school, I’d go to MoHo because I think I’d have a better chance of getting through the program and into medical school. Please note that two of the dozen faculty members in the biology department at MoHo are MoHo graduates.

Second, English is a strong department at each of the schools you cite, as it is at many top schools. Again, what distinguishes MOHO is the small size of the classes. This presents greater opportunities for you of developing relationship with your teachers.

Third, I think the alumni network at MoHo, though smaller, will be stronger than at Tufts and W&M. This is generally the case with the top women’s colleges.

Though you didn’t ask, MoHo has the most beautiful campus of the three. W&M is very nice, but it is not beautiful in the way MoHo is. And Tufts? It’s Tufts.

You will have a MUCH diverse experience at Tufts, as its student body is more diverse than the 2 other schools. Regarding the above post, look at the student/teacher ratio at the 2 other schools. They are very low in the grand scheme of things. There is much more going on at Tufts, and Davis Square, and in Boston, than the other 2 schools have to offer. It’s not even close!!! They are all beautiful schools. Visit all and get the vibe! And, unlike to previous poster, I think the 2 other schools have great alumni networks.

Unless you love the idea of an all-female school, I would avoid MoHo. It is just a very different experience. My spouse and I both have experience with single-sex schools, and that is not what we wanted for our kids.
As between Tufts and W&M, they are both excellent schools (as is MoHo, although it is the probably known as the easiest to get into - assuming we are talking about out-of-state apps to W&M). But they will have very different feels and cultures. Do you favor New England, and easy access to Cambridge and Boston, or Virginia, and Williamsburg (i.e., no big city)? If you decide that, the rest will fall in place.
Bottom line, though, is that they are all fine schools at which you would get a first rate education.
