Hi, I was recently Admitted to Tufts as a sophomore engineering transfer. I wanted to know how much time consuming joining a varsity sport (specifically soccer) would be. I would like to be a part of other clubs and have a social life outside of clubs and soccer (either going to boston or staying on campus.
Also,
I know the soccer team is pretty good… how hard is it to get into the team?
The soccer team is the number one D3 team in the country. It is pretty much impossible to make the team, unless you were on the team at your previous school (and even then wouldn’t necessarily be a sure thing). I would guess that Tufts has a pretty good club soccer team too, though. It is very time consuming to be on a team. I have heard in season that it takes about 30+ hours a week.
Would the club team be a 30 hour week?
When enjoyed, such activities may be invaluable!

This can be a valued asset in your education!
Thanks! Anyone have any info on club soccer, club rugby, or varsity/club sailing?
any info on golf and running club?
S attends a different school but plays Club Baseball. I imagine it’s similar. He would describe it as low / medium commitment (meaning you don’t always have to participate - they understand school comes first) but serious from a competition perspective. They typically will have more kids than needed because not everyone can make all the practices and games due to schedules.
His club has a light fall schedule and is more serious in the spring. Two practices per week and three game series on the weekends (double header on Saturday, single game on Sunday). Quality of play is good. Typically solid to very good HS players who couldn’t or didn’t want to play at the college level. It’s very organized with regional / national scope, tournaments, championships, etc. Great way to keep those competitive juices flowing while playing at a higher level than intramural sports.
In terms if running…
The Marathon team is a running club that trains to run in the Boston Marathon to raise money for charities. Before the marathon bombing, Tufts used to have about 200 runners in the marathon, but now the race sponsor limits the Tufts community to 50 official slots. Many students go to cheer them on. Tufts volunteers also man a couple of the official hydration stations along the route, passing out drinks to 30,000 runners as they go by… The Boston Marathon was cancelled for the first time jn history this year.

Both mens and womens cross country teams placed 4th at the regionals this fall, with the women placing 8th at the nationals. The track teams were at the regionals painted in Tufts colors cheering them on.

Winter track season was truncated this year, but last year the men were seventh in the nation and the women were eleventh. Spring track deason was cancelled.
@Mastadon thanks. I’m interested in running and training for the marathon. Also interested in Spartan races.
