Tufts vs NYU undergrad

Hi,

So I've gotten into Tufts and NYU for undergrad, but still don't know which one I should go to. I plan on going to law school and majoring in ART HISTORY. I've always wanted to go to NYU, it's been my dream school but everyone's been telling me that I'm making a mistake choosing it over Tufts. I come from a very poor family, our EFC is 0 and our annual income is less than what it costs for half a year of tuition at either of these schools so money is a factor, but I'm willing to take out huge loans if its worth the experience. So what do you guys think? Is NYU worth going?

Tufts - pros
*Higher rank
*is in a cheaper area, will be able to afford to hang out more with friends

Tufts- con
*full of Ivy-league rejects, people who don't necessarily want to be there
*sort of a bland atmosphere

NYU - pros
*Lots of museums and gallerys to intern at
*Lots of diverstiy, full of people excited to go there
*easier to get a good GPA (according to some unreliable sources)

NYU - cons
*didn't get enough financial aid
*won't be able to afford a NYC lifestyle

Thanks for the help

If you want to do law, go with NYU. I has a top 5 law school, and the undergrad is good as well.

NYU is not as "incestuous" as other schools when it comes to going to one of their grad/professional programs from one of their undergrad programs so it may actually be harder for you to get to NYU law from NYU undergrad. After going through 2 NYU graduate programs I can tell you first hand that very few of my classmates were NYU undergrads).

In addition, you have a "0" EFC, your best bet would be to follow the $$ and go to Tufts (which is a great school not a fate worse than death)

My daughter went to a college in NYC and the cost of living there is extremely high. There is nothing worse than being in the middle of so much opportunity and being able to do so little of it because of finances. There is also a lot of emphasis placed on appearance in NYC and that involves labels ... not just high-end store labels but designer labels. In addition, since everyone wants to intern in NYC, very few of the internships were paid internships.

We are a single parent family and it was quite a strain, even though our EFC was higher than yours. If my daughter had decided to attend law school afterwards, we would not have been able to afford it.

Tufts is a great school and its rep is stronger every year. Boston is still an expensive city but it is much more manageable than NYC.

Tufts- con
*full of Ivy-league rejects, people who don't necessarily want to be there
*sort of a bland atmosphere

This is definitely not true at Tufts!! Tufts was ranked on Princeton Review's list of "Happiest Students" last year- people love being at Tufts and are very happy here. Your cons are old stereotypes-come to the Open House and you will see.

greenboy, it certianly is true, Tufts is a bland sandwich with a side of bitter.

Go to NYU, your heart is clearly there. Being from such a poor family you may be eligible for some outside scholarships. Follow your dream!

Tufts is very diverse and far from bland.

what utter nonsense... My dad WENT to tufts, and I live in massachusetts, so I know that tufts is very interesting! I bet you're probably not from MA

Go to Tufts... A LOT cheaper than NYC, not just the room and board thing, but also shopping, etc... Seeing how you're family is poor, I would NOT suggest going to NYC, unless you want your family at home to STARVE to death

I can't comment on NYU but Tufts is a place for people committed to civic service, who take a global view of things, who aspire to make the world a better place, and who are intelligent, passionate and self-assured. If this is you, you should be a good fit.

I'm sorry If I offended anyone with my comments about Tufts, but that was just based on my personnal experience. I had a few friends who really hated it there, but I'm sure that's not true for most people.

^ Yeah, I'm quite surprised by your friends experiences....I've never really found a person who hated it at Tufts...weird.
