Tuition definition

At schools like HADES and so on,does tuition include room and board, or anything else for that matter? What exactly are you paying for with that 30k+?

Based on the difference between Boarding and Day costs, the cost of living on campus (i.e. room) is $8,800 for a year. The cost of food is included in the remaining ~31,000. Books and travel and spending money are not included in this figure.

i mean, it cost a lot to keep up these school, pay the teachers, heat buildings, provide good food, so the cost is reflexive on those things a lot of the time.

At HADES the 40k tuition is used for room and board, education and resources. You have to consider the state-of-art facilities, the wonderful teachers, the beautiful campus, and other things also.

Tuition does not include room and board and living costs. It is just a sum of money charged for teaching or instruction by a school, college, or university.

I have a question about the tuition and the extra–midyear do boarding schools send out a letter saying something like, “the difference between a HADES tuition and its actual cost is $5000
and therefore we are asking all families to contribute what they can to our annual fund”? If so, what is the usual amount of the extra they ask for?

Yes, they do send a letter and the amount they suggest (if any) varies by school. Even if you can only send in a dollar, do it. The participation percentage is important to the school (the closer to 100% participation the better), and they understand that times are hard and contributing to the annual fund may be the last thing on your list after paying for BS, but every little bit helps and they won’t look down their noses at the amount of any contribution. All contributions are gladly received.

That is good to know–thanks, Choatie Mom. I’m trying to manage cost expectations should this all happen, and as we all know, school is never limited to just the listed tuition amount.

@Kittenygoodness,

the actual difference between a HADES tuition and its actual cost is more like $35,000-- tuition only covers half the cost.

Holy cow. I hope they aren’t asking or expecting a check for that amount every year. We still have college to take care of.

By “they” I mean any boarding school. Not making any assumptions here, believe me.

No, “they” don’t expect all the families to contribute that amount-- especially since +/- 40 percent of the kids are receiving FA. But they do ask that for those families that can easily afford to it (and it’s staggering how uber-wealthy some of these families are), to please be generous and make up the difference.
