What does the tuition cover and is the dorm included???

No, room & board are separate charges.

Oh OK cause I get my tuition paid for. Is the room a lot of money???

Most schools have separate COA for students live on campus / off campus / commuting. If you live on campus, the school will bill you. If you live off campus, you have to find the place that fit your budget.

You need to check your college website ASAP for the costs of dorms and a meal plan…and fees as well.

You need to be certain you can cover these costs.

Room and board varies quite a bit by location. R&B for NYU is $16K+, while at Bemidji State it’s $7300.

Bishopgurl, if you are attending UMD-CP, the room cost is $6424, and board is $4209., $10633 total.

If your tuition is fully covered by a scholarship or grant, then you still are eligible to take a Direct Loan of $5500 to help with your room/board costs if needed.

I believe UMD is on semesters, and if that is correct, you will be billed half of this amount for the fall term, and the other half for the spring term.

BUT…really, this is from my reading of their website. I would STRONGLY suggest you look online at your student portal to see if your bill is there, and contact the Bursar’s office to find out what your fall bill will be.

I am assuming that you are living ON campus. If that is not true…look on the website for cost of attendance for commuting students.

UMD-CP’s website lumps tuition and fees together. Do you know if you received tuition only or tuition and fees? Fees can often be substantial so if not covered you should find out how much they are. Call if you need to.

In another post she says that she is going to be graduating from high school in 2015.

I’ma foster child and this oorganization called kids peace payes for my tuition when I go to college for 4 years

Great that you are planning ahead. Being a foster child will help you out when you fill out financial aid forms for college. Some schools will grant you additional need-based aid, and you should qualify for federal grants. As a freshman you can qualify for $5,500 in federal loans which would cover half of the current room and board cost at UMD-CP.

It isn’t too early to speak with your guidance counselor or even the admissions office at the college to discuss financial aid options.

Oh OK. I thought I had to pay for the entire cost of the room myself

If you use loan money to help pay costs, you are paying for that yourself. Keep that in mind. You’re just not paying yourself in advance.

Oh ok

Hey bishopgurl,

Good that you are thinking about this now.

As others have stated once you file the FAFSA, you will be considered and independent student.

If you must borrow, you can borrow at the independent rate of $9500 (3500 subsidized and $6000 unsubsidized)

If you have a 0 EFC, you will be eligible for $5730

https://studentaid.ed.gov/types/grants-scholarships/pell

If you are a Maryland resident, you will most likely be eligible for state’s guaranteed access grant

http://www.mhec.state.md.us/financialaid/descriptions.asp

In addition I am recommend that you apply for the the Maryland EVT programs for foster youth

These grants should be enough to cover your demonstrated need to the extent that you may not need loans if you attend college in-state.

All the best

Can you provide the link about this program that pays tuition.

Each college will have a COA which is the estimated cost of attendance. The tuition and fees will be fixed but the other costs are just estimates because it depends (maybe you can save in places.) If you are looking at UMD-CP the page for this year is here.

Tuition & Fees $9,427
Books & Supplies $1,130*
Room On Campus $6,424
Board On Campus $4,209
Personal Expenses & Transportation $3,162*
Total On Campus $24,352

http://financialaid.umd.edu/budgets/2014_undergrad_budget.html

Notice in the link, the estimates are different depending on where you are living. Also they put an asterisk next to costs that vary depending on what you spend. Non asterisk costs are billed by the school, but the asterisk costs are just things you have to budget and have money for yourself. As people are saying here, you may be able to get these costs covered too. The more grant money to cover COA you can get then the less loans you have to take. Also note that these are costs for 9 months of the year.

So are you telling me that my books and classes are covered in the tuition but I’m paying for the room or what??

you said that you have a program that pays for your tuition.

You must still have some sort or funding or pay for the following?

Fees

Books
Room
Board
Transportation
Personal Misc. Expenses

Have you filed for financial aid? Have you filled out the FAFSA? You will need to do this in order to get federal and state aid.

No! Look at the list I gave. Tuition (and fees) is just tuition which is the set cost of attending classes for the year. for For UMD, you can see tuition & fee combined for the full school year is 9,427.

Books are a separate additional cost. If you look at the list in my post you can see the book estimate cost listed separately estimated at 1,130 each year. All other costs listed are separate additional expenses and everything adds up to about 24,000.

You have several ways to get money. If your tuition and fees will be paid by one source that will be great. You may also be eligible for a Federal Pell Grant that can help pay some of your other costs as listed in the COA. Sometimes the school itself will give you grants to pay for some of the expenses.Or other organizations. If you go to UMD for instance, your total cost may be about 24,000 each year, so you should be looking to ways to get as much of that covered as possible.

If you will be attending next fall, it is too early to file FAFSA for aid. It opens Jan 2, 2015. But when you apply for colleges this fall, there may be financial documents the colleges want. See the pages on the website regarding financial aid and be sure to check YES if they are asking if you are applying for financial aid.
