My experience last year too regarding ED and TE. Some schools, for example Occidental, likes to see TE and ED but I found that not to be the case at many selective schools. So definately discuss with the import school’s liason. A note on Rhodes, my D applied there with TE. Because they are rolling admssions she heard from them soon after submitting her Regular Decision application ( I am thinking November even) and in their acceptance letter they offered quite a bit of Merit. In fact, the merit would have been better then the TE so I would keep your eye on Rhodes as I found them surprisingly generous with Merit and so early in the process.
Thanks for the Rhodes info. My dd did apply there EA, but didn’t send in the recommended “elevator pitch” by the deadline, as the app to submit it was giving her problems. Hoping that won’t hurt her too much. Good to hear they have good merit too.
Our experience has been that some, but not all, colleges will let you know with the admittance decision. For those that don’t we exerted a bit of pressure letting the schools know that other institutions were expecting a decision and that we didn’t want to tie up a spot for another student.
So far it has been our experience that the TE decision is separate from other merit consideration although once they decide on whether to offer you TE then they include that and the other merit scholarships in your wholistic Financial Aid offer. For instance, my daughter has applied to 4 TE schools. She’s been admitted to 3 (still waiting on one) and in that initial admittance letter she received some merit scholarship offers. One of the schools, about a month after acceptance, also offered her TE. Then about a month after that (just a couple weeks ago) we got an entire Financial Aid Offer folder. It showed the full break down of costs minus scholarships (ex. $25,000 President’s Scholarship, $1,000 Alumni Scholarship, $18,123 Tuition Exchange Scholarship [I am guesstimating this number - it was whatever was necessary to make up the Tuition difference]. Then, our cost bottom line was room, board and maybe some fees. I’m not sure if this is how every college does it. I guess we’ll know once/if she gets any other TE offers! Our TE applications at the other schools are still pending decision. We’re hoping we start to hear from those schools in January/February.
I saw in another thread that someone got acceptance for TE from Lawrence with their admission.
Rare but some schools do this.
So far my son has been offered TE from Springfield College and Eastern University.
Being offered TE before March, sadly feels to be the exception especially with the very competitive TE schools. Most of us last year had to wait it out until March to hear from the TE schools despite already being accepted at the school and often with Merit in the acceptance letter ( thank you Rhodes and Rollins). It’s nice having the company here though as everyone is anxiously awaiting and its nice to have like minded parents to wait it out with. It’s a rollar coaster ride.
2 years ago my daughter (applied to more competitive schools) did not hear from any of them until jan/feb and she committed to a college before she heard back from most of them. So frustrating- especially for an athlete!
I agree that its super frustrating. I think the best plan of attack is to have a state backup with considerable score-based merit waiting in the wings. That’s what we did back in 2019 with my son.
We are in New England and I think our schools are on the slower side to dole out the tuition exchange notifications. And most early action notifications won’t be for another week.
Great news! I love hearing these TE results coming in!
Was it a TE Award or acceptance to the college you just got?
It was a TE award.
@Russ2 Catholic is our daughter’s top choice and she actually committed there for soccer so we are really hoping that the TE comes through. We may actually have a problem is it does not work out. When did you find out last year?
My daughter should find out if she gets a TE scholarship during the first round of decisions at Susquehanna University, as they are expecting to let applicants know by the end of the week. I am DYING here…even if she doesn’t get one, she is still going there, but getting full tuition ($53K a year) would be heavenly.
Fingers crossed!
Great that Susquehanna does full tuition. While Syracuse may offer more TE awards, I believe it is for the set rate. So if set rate is 40k and SU charges 80K a year, even with the TE award its out of our price range.
I had always thought that Syracuse approves all requests for students who are admitted. I think they were one of the founding institutions. We applied to a few set rate schools, but tuition is only about $5k over the $39k so I think we’d be good.
SU website says tuition is 55,920. (plus 16k or more for housing). With the set TE rate being about 40k this year. Thats still out of our price range. So while SU may be a “guaranteed TE award” for my lower stats kid, sadly, it will likely be off the list.
We’ve also never considered it for that very reason!
