That’s great. I went to BU years ago and two of my three kids are in Boston, but just one at at TE school. I’m not certain if I’ll get the Boston trifecta with D22, but Emmanuel is among her faves (Nursing). Simmons was off the table as she currently attends an all-girls school and was hoping for something different. Her sister is at Northeastern and she was not ED committed, so she took her lottery chance with EA and was deferred.
I went to BU for graduate school! Boston is such a great place to go to school. Good luck with Emmanuel!
Oh my gosh. I had no idea that these import schools were dealing with that many TE apps. No wonder it’s like winning the lottery if you are awarded one! Makes me feel better about not being awarded TE at my D’s school of choice last year.
DD with good academic stats (GPA 4.8, SAT 1530, multiple APs), okay on extracurriculars, but probably short on leadership.
Agnes Scott -applied EA, admitted with merit scholarship in Dec, TE added today (yea!) to bring scholarship amt up to the TE benefit
Rhodes College - applied EA, admitted with merit scholarship in Jan, on wait list for TE. The admissions counselor told me he thinks they award 30 TE spots–that seems like a lot??
Awaiting admit decisions/TE for:
Case Western, Mt Holyoke, Rochester Institute of Technology, Lawrence
Rhodes sounds a little sus to me for a college with about 2,000 students that they would have 30 spots. Given your DD stats above the 75%, I might suggest inquiring about the criteria. The only thing I can think is that they are using them to attempt to fill athletic rosters. Did you reach out to the TE liaison? I have to wonder if an admissions counselor has some sort of goals that are opaque to us.
Yea–I thought 30 sounded really high too. I did inquire about the criteria since after I heard the 30 number I was a little surprised that with that many DD didn’t make the cut. I was told they look at “the whole application”, but NOT test scores, so maybe they didn’t like her essay, and others had really nice leadership profiles or more demonstrated interest? or like you say sports, or maybe more financial need, as they are a school that requires FAFSA for TE. We’re going to visit in next month, so I might do a little more poking then with someone a little closer to the TE process.
I found this link about TE at Rhodes.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.rhodes.edu/sites/default/files/2021-09/Tuition_Exchange_Imports_FAQ_2022-23.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwil38qX_OH1AhWldt8KHTW-CfoQFnoECCcQAQ&usg=AOvVaw3K68TyVU5mrAikHLMfp1aY
They say they anticipate 5-7 TE slots for next year. Maybe they have 30 total spots across all 4 years? That still comes up a little short, but a lot of schools underestimated the number of students who would be willing to attend during the pandemic, so they might have offered more TE, too, expecting people to back out.
It also looks like they have multiple exchange networks, so those 30 spots may not all be for Tuition Exchange brand tuition exchange.
The language in this Rhodes information is nearly identical to information we received from Sacred Heart. The Tuition Exchange must provide a stock FAQ for institutions to share with applicants.
That is so nice of them to create the FAQ! Thank you for sharing.
I don’t know about Delaware, but I know that our home school said that last year they had 120 students who were ACCEPTED to the university AND eligible for TE/FACHEX and they had 10 spots to award. They use a holistic review but some schools go on straight stats – it’s totally up to the individual schools how to award. It seems that most keep a waitlist (a friend’s kid got TE off the waitlist at BU last year) but many do not. They can award as many TE spots as they like, but they have to be within a certain percentage of the number of exports as a minimum so it makes sense that larger schools would have more TE awards unless they cap their exports like BU.
I found last year that the Merit offer from Rhodes was right up their with TE. They were very generous with their Merit. Fingers crossed with the remaining schools. Case Western is often very good with awarding TE. Looks like you will have some nice options though regardless.
Hi! DD was just accepted to Agnes Scott last night. She was awarded a merit scholarship with admission letter but no information about TE. How did you receive the TE notification (and huge congrats!). Does the TE benefit with Merit Scholarship cover full tuition?
She’s also in to home institution (Belmont) and has a ton of applications still out, most who won’t send decisions until late March. The only TE schools in there are Sarah Lawrence and American U, neither of which offer full tuition. Agnes Scott has become a real contender for her.
Congrats on her admission! Each school is different. Hopefully there is info on their website about TE – when you would be notified and if she is awarded TE does she get to use the merit scholarship too. I know the schools that my D applied to did not “stack” the awards but this does depend on the school. If you can’t find the info on the school’s website then you can email the TE rep at that school, they are usually very helpful. Congrats again!
My wife’s school, SMU, apparently dropped out of TE more than 20 years ago. They said it was too popular. Maybe they didn’t limit the numbers to the expected amount of exports. Now it’s SMU or nada but they’re generous with years two to four if the F&S kid doesn’t qualify in year one. Maybe need a 3.0 or less from other university.
I was going to ask whether or not Agnes Scott will stack merit aid on top of TE Scholarships. The two schools that offered TE to my daughter, Susquehanna Univ and Stetson Univ. do not stack any institutional aid. My daughter was admitted to Belmont as well, but their merit aid was a joke. It was 6th on her list of 7 colleges, so she wasn’t disappointed at all. She declined her acceptance once she was admitted ED to her #1 school with TE.
I contacted the TE Liaison at Agnes Scott yesterday and got a ton of good info. First, I was informed that DD is being awarded TE at Agnes Scott and will get her notification next week. Yay!
Second - Agnes Scott uses TE to bridge the gap between her merit scholarship and full tuition. Her merit award was $26,000 and so TE will cover the difference. She was also invited to compete for the Presidential Scholarship, which covers tuition, room and board, and if she gets that, it replaces the TE and other merit awards. If she doesn’t get the Presidential (they give 4 out a year so it’s unlikely), and other outside scholarships she gets can be applied to room and board. I was stunned, actually. Sounds about as generous as a school could get.
She applied to a ton of schools, most are not in TE and the two that are offer the set rate (Sarah Lawrence and American). Most of her schools are reach schools that provide generous need-based aid, but also precariously low acceptance rates, so we’ll just have to see how it all plays out, but this Agnes Scott package will be hard to turn down.
I’m happy to say that we have our first TE acceptance so a bit of a sigh of relieve at our home front. It’s for Salve Regina in Newport, RI and we are going to accepted students day on Friday.
Delaware is straight stats, no holistic view as they tout.
Congrats on Salve! (on our list!)
@2plustrio maybe check the app status on TE? We received an email but I do check it everyday.
