Base, in-state undergraduate tuition on Penn State University's main campus will increase this fall by 5.9 percent under a proposal approved by school trustees at a meeting today in Du Bois.

It will add $808 a year to the current base rate of $13,604 paid by thousands of in-state, lower division students at University Park.

Under Penn State's differential tuition system, juniors and seniors in some cases pay higher amounts depending on their majors.

Under the plan, in-state and out-of-state students at Penn State's other campuses would see a 3.9 percent increase, and out-of-state students on the main campus would see their base tuition rise by 4.5 percent.

In dollars, the proposal would mean in-state increases per year of $470 at the Altoona, Berks, Erie and Harrisburg campuses; and $450 a year at the other Commonwealth Campuses.

Out-of-state students would see dollar increases of $1,142 a year on the main campus; $720 a year at Altoona, Berks, Erie and Harrisburg; and $688 at the other Commonwealth Campuses.

The tuition rates are part of a $4 billion operating budget for Penn State that contains $12 million in expense reductions from an across-the-board 1 percent departmental cut and other savings, the university said. The budget was approved this afternoon.

Speaking to school trustees, Penn State President Graham Spanier said the university tried to keep the increase as small as possible in an economy that has strained the university's finances. Like other public universities, Penn State received no funding increase from the state this year.

In discussing the school's budgeting goals for the year, Dr. Spanier said Penn State sought to reinstate modest faculty and staff salary increases.

Penn State has about 94,000 students including its online division.

The school also approved a $6 per semester increase in the Information Technology Fee for fulltime students.

It also raised the per-semester student activity fee by $3 for students on the main campus, and by $5 to $10 at 14 other campuses, with 10 locations seeing no increase in the fee.
