I’m rejected, really disappointed :((((((( 1550/2220 SAT, 3.56 UW GPA, great ecs and rec lets, solid essays.
“The Committee on Admission has completed review of your application for admission to Tulane University. Regretfully, you were not among those students selected for admission to the university. A letter with further information will be mailed to your home.”
Sending a letter in addition to notifying applicants of their rejection online seems superfluous. Just killing more trees. Tsk tsk.
It would be a little interesting to know, but I bet 95% of the schools out there, at least, send letters along with their online notifications.
Tulane wins the most succinct rejection so far. Just a few characters over a tweet.
A refreshing change to those personalized elegantly worded rejection letters. #notyou
@fallenchemist I’m pretty sure for my daughter’s class of 2014 (she’s a freshman at Tulane now), about 19 or 20 kids got admitted and 6 ended up enrolling (which was about twice the number from prior classes). I did hear that this year it got significantly more difficult at our high school, and that many EA kids got deferred while only SCEA primarily got admitted. Haven’t heard about the deferrals and RD kids’ results yet.
@Suzanne34
That’s interesting. That sounds like the same kind of numbers that have been typical at my old high school in suburban St. Louis for quite some time now. I wonder if it has gotten harder there too. I wouldn’t be surprised.
I will be the first to admit that admission to Tulane can be a bit hard to figure out sometime. But admissions knows what they are looking for, and it seems to have been successful in that all the classes that have come in for at least the last 8 years have been excellent academically, have a significant number that truly care about community service, and for the vast majority really seem extremely happy at Tulane. Of course even Harvard and Stanford and Duke, etc. have a few that decide they are in the wrong place. I think it is no coincidence that Tulane has been named several times to these lists of schools that are “hot”, and that it seems to be especially getting a lot of positive word-of-mouth on the West Coast.
I can anticipate people asking “Well, if they know what they are looking for, why don’t they tell us so that we can apply if we fit and not apply if we don’t?” First, of course it isn’t really that simple. Second, even to the degree they could, I think we all know people would then just try and tailor their applications to play to that. I would hope no one would really dispute that. But people throw up these great stats and say “I cannot believe I didn’t get in. Tulane must be playing games”. People just refuse to believe there is a lot more to being admitted to many schools than just stats. I don’t know what else to tell them.
By the way @fallenchemist, you were completely right! After being WL’d at Tulane, I got into USC, Rice, and Stanford!! Could not be happier. Congrats to everyone who was accepted, and to those not, you will end up in the right place for you!!!
@DL43516
I got something right? Bound to happen occasionally. Now if I could only remember what it was…
Just kidding, I remember saying you would get into several great schools. You done did real good, those are super choices. In fact, as many people have heard on here ad nauseum, my daughter is in graduate school at Stanford, and really likes it out there. Any idea which you will choose?
As a courtesy, send Tulane a quick note to take you off the wait list.
@fallenchemist of course I shall! And no, not yet. There’s only a 1K difference between the Rice and Stanford aid packages, but I don’t know if I’m comfortable putting around 10K a year on my family. What do you think, is it worth it for a school like that?? I’m also still waiting on Columbia, UPenn, and Brown.
10K a year? Yes, I would definitely say that represents a good investment for those schools. It’s at the upper limit of what I usually say people should take on, but still in the reasonable range by today’s standards, IMO. Would getting into any of the three you are waiting on change your choice, or does it depend on what kind of FA you might get from them before you can say?
Money is definitely a deciding factor, but getting in would add more to decide. Even now, I’m not really sure between Rice, Stanford, and USC; although I am leaning toward Stanford. Me, my mom/stepdad, and my grandparents would all be contributing to the cost, so it should be manageable.
Has anyone heard from Tulane today? I know they announced that the applicants would know by April 1, but I still haven’t received a decision?
I applied single choice, early action and I was deferred. I, like many others, have been waiting an extremely long time. I know there have been more applicants this year, but I thought we would know by today.
In all honesty, it is making me extremely stressed out.
@pulsars
You definitely should have heard by now. Have you checked your Gibson account? Because if they updated that yesterday or the day before, you might not get the paper notification for another week. If your Gibson account doesn’t have a decision, call them tomorrow. Tulane is on Spring Break, but the office should be working.
@fallenchemist
Yes, I have checked everyday for a month now.
I have checked ten times just today.
It still says the same “Your application is complete and is awaiting review…”
I’m very discouraged. I will definitely give them a call tomorrow. It is my number one choice and this is very disappointing.
Thank you for replying. I feel like I am on my own at this point.
I don’t know if I am allowed to double post in a row, but I called Tulane and it turns out that there was an issue with my application (long story, short) and that is why I didn’t receive a decision on time. It changed the next day and I was accepted.
Tulane is my number one choice and I am so excited to go. I am so thankful for Tulane’s speedy response.
That’s awesome! Congrats. Like I tell my kids, sometimes you just have to pick up the phone and take action. Well done.
@pulsars
I will send you my bill in the mail.
And yes, you can be the poster on two posts in a row.
Seriously, that is beyond awesome. Congratulations and welcome to the Tulane family. And @VAmomof4 is absolutely right. Never be afraid to call and shake things loose sometimes. Just never do it in anger, but instead have your facts straight and stay calm as much as possible, no matter how dense the other party is being. I have found over and over that people are often so used to getting yelled at and called every name in the book, that when you are nice and understanding but firm, you get their help above and beyond the usual.
Anyway I am drifting off topic, the lead story is that you are all set for fall. So glad it was a simple mistake they were able to handle so quickly. What a great result.
I still have yet to hear from Tulane…after a week of not hearing, I called the office, and it turns out that there was a processing error with my application. I was told that I would hear from them within the week. Now it has been two weeks and my portal has not updated with a decision. I feel very discouraged, just like pulsars did when he hadn’t heard. I don’t know what to do, because I’m afraid to call again
Don’t be afraid. This is a time of year when you have to be bold. Polite, of course, but firm that you need an answer. You have little to lose.
