Deferred with a 3.9 UW, top 5%, 1490/1600 submitted, hooked applicant (URM). Received 1590/1600 (2380) received after applying EA (not submitted). Crushed at the moment. Apparently, I was not what they were looking for? Once I get over the pain, I'll decide my next steps, obviously, Tulane must feel that I am not a good fit. Thinking about sending the 1590/1600 although not looking forward to be turned down twice by the same school. Good luck to all!

First of all, you were not turned down. Second, if you read this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/1588953-deferred-early-action-tulane.html and a couple of the others, you will understand that Tulane is pretty sure your sights are set on the schools ranked in the top 20 of the USNWR rankings. Your CC name would certainly seem to confirm that.

So don’t be crushed, there should be no pain. In a way it is a compliment to your achievements so far. If your real goal is several schools in the HYPS tier, then why worry about this? If, instead, you really feel like Tulane is a good fit for you and it is a top 3 choice, definitely send in the higher score and communicate with your admissions officer.

I got deferred as well. I’m in the top 10% (highest my school goes because its a small private school), with a 96 gpa( not on a 4.0 a scale), a bunch of ap classes and scores, URM ( I’m a minority and a female looking at engineering), and I submitted a 33 act. I think it has to do with when you apply( someone in my school who applied in September got in immediately-like a week after the nov 15 deadline) and how much they think you’re actually interested in the school. They probably think that they’re a backup/safety or just an application out of curiosity. If you really wanna go, show them how much you’re interested.

So how about you, BriBri? Are you really interested in Tulane or do your hopes lay elsewhere?

My son has a 2400 SAT, 800’s on all his SAT II exams, 4.0 GPA, National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Distinction, Varsity athlete in crew with a National title, Captain of Science Olympiad and Science Bowl and he got deferred from Tulane. Funny thing is that his brother attends Tulane and deferred son has done an official tour of the school and sent in a well thought out and time consuming application for the DHS. Deferred son sent in the optional essay after the deferral and still no movement on his deferral status. He would have made an awesome addition to the Tulane campus but now is setting his sights on other schools. The college application process can be so crazy!
Well, @stellabubba, I don’t think Tulane has moved on any deferred candidates yet. He still is in the mix, I am sure. I remember a student just like this that didn’t hear they had been accepted until they got he UPS package that announced they had won the DHS! That was either last year or the year before, hard to remember which.
So they are starting to move on some deferred students. DD2 applied early Nov., was deferred, and just got an email that she has been accepted. Now we wait on the letter to see if there is any merit scholarship/can we afford it. DD1 currently attends Tulane, and DD2 would be really fired up to attend if it is financially possible.
Great to know, @Bigmacattack. Thanks for the heads up.
So we don’t have to check Gibson/wait for a letter now to find out if we’ve been accepted? That’s great!
Hmmm, frankly I glossed over the email part. That might just be a particular admissions person who did a little extra. @Bigmacattack can you confirm you meant email and not a Gibson notice?
It was odd, DD2 got an email saying “Please confirm your enrollment now” and that if she had not yet received her acceptance letter, she would soon. This prompted her to check Gibson, where she saw the acceptance notification. So no email exactly saying she’d been admitted. I’d recommend checking Gibson
I understand protecting yield, etc., but it seems that Tulane is playing a dangerous game. @stellabubba’s child has a sibling at the school, visited, and applied for a scholarship. What more do they want him to do to show interest? I could certainly understand if he felt resentful of the fact that with his stellar record, he now has to tell people who ask that he was deferred and choose to cast his lot elsewhere.
OK, that makes much more sense. Once you have been accepted they start sending out emails to probe if you have made a decision yet. Those are automatic. Yours just came weirdly soon after being accepted, Bigmac. Let us know if the letter has good news.
@pittsburghscribe I think the issue was sending in the Why Tulane? AFTER deferral. That essay is extremely important to Tulane.
Ah, I missed that distinction, @Chopinspiano! Thanks.
