Tulane for History/Economics? (And undergraduate research questions)

Hi,

I’ll be applying early to study at Tulane. I love their commitment to social work and community service(which is why I’m applying) but I was also wondering about how strong their humanities department is. I plan on studying history, with either English, Econ, or psych.

There are also a couple professors and research programs I found that I would love to work/intern at, but was also wondering how easy it is for undergrads to get these opportunities. It seems that at many universities that place emphasis on grad programs it’s tough for undergrads to intern.

Thanks!

Wow, it would appear Tulane is a great choice for you. Even though I was a chem major, I am a history buff as well as a fan of American Southern literature. Tulane has some great history professors with many different passions. In fact I am about halfway through The Accidental City by Lawrence Powell. My D was a double major in Asian (China) Studies and English. One of her favorite profs was Brian Demare, and they would talk frequently even when she wasn’t taking one of his classes. Tulane is like that, the profs and undergrads are often close, with many profs having students over for meals. Even some faculty that isn’t technically part of the history department are amazing, such as Richard Campanella http://architecture.tulane.edu/people/richard-campanella He wears several fascinating hats, but I couldn’t put down his book about Lincoln’s time in New Orleans and the influence it appeared to have on his politics and judgement. He is one of the few people I follow on Twitter.

Finally:

Tulane could not be any more opposite of this. The emphasis is heavily on giving those undergrads that show strong academic interest every opportunity to be involved at the highest levels. In fact, that is largely what the Honors Program is about, although one does not have to be in it to get those opportunities. But it does help.

I would say: my son graduated this past May major in Physics and had REU (Research for undergraduates). It was done in summer time (the whole summer) and the pay was really good. So, I am pretty sure that there are plenty of internships or researches given by Tulane for undergraduates. Of course, you still have to find it and it is not given just like that.
