My son is accepting his offer from Tulane to begin this fall. As I am going through their information I see they require a certain standard of health insurance or else offer a product for the NOLA area. My existing health insurance is bronze level and would cover him there for emergencies but preventative care would have to be done in his home state as our health insurance is part of only a state wide network. It appears I will have to get him the Tulane health insurance to meet their requirements? Has anyone walked down this path before with their experience? If we have to switch him, do I drop him from our health insurance? We are self employed and pay the premium ourselves so having to pay twice would be quite an expense that I would like to avoid. On the other hand, depending on how much we could save by dropping him from ours and enrolling him on Tulane’s maybe it will turn out even in the end.
Many plans will cover the initial emergency treatment anywhere but follow up care would need to be done in network. Be careful.
hi, my son is a junior at Tulane. I Have United health care in my state and his first two years they accepted it and I received a waiver. For the current school year they declined my coverage and said it did not cover enough in La. and I had to purchase the school insurance, also United Healthcare. I believe it was $800 for the year. they did not give me a choice, they brought in an outside company to analyze students insurance and became very strict. My sons room mate had to get it as well. Good Luck!
