I would like your take on Tulane University.

NO! Most definitely not.

Care to elaborate?

Tulane is a heckuva lot of fun, but to call it a party school is a bit much. The students at Tulane are very bright and engaging and know how to balance their student lives between the academic workload and the fun that can be found on campus and out and about in New Orleans.

Not at all! I love a good party but I'm nothing close to your stereotypical college partier. I just spent last weekend at Tulane, including an overnight stay with a current student, and I LOVED IT.

New Orleans is fantastic. The culture of the place really gets under your skin and it's hard to not love it. I think a lot of people up north just see Tulane and New Orleans as a place to escape from warm weather that has some great parties. There's a lot more to the place. It's taken a front seat in helping New Orleans recover from the hurricane and almost all the students seemed really engaged in the surrounding community. I was dead set on going next year but unexpectedly got into a school I didn't think I had a chance in hell of getting into. If my visit there falls short of my experience at Tulane, I'm going to Tulane.

What do current students think of the balance between academics and drinking?

Last year, there was one kid that went to Tulane and was unhappy about Tulane. He wanted to transfer out. You might want to google for his post.

I agree with you Tulsadem. The school just seemed amazing-I loved the way it felt. That might not be the best way to choose though. It does have one of the best departments in America for a major I like (Latin American Studies) and it's programs in my other area of interest look solid. I want to go there but am so afraid after hearing all the stories of people who hate it. NOLA and the school itself seem so good though .

I'm strongly considering Tulane as well, but haven't had the chance to visit(from pa). How's the poli science dept? Also,A family member told me the surrounding neighborhoods are shady/unsafe and there's a stench still present from Katrina. Any truth to those claims?

You might want to post the question regarding polsci major on Tulane forum itself.
Regarding the shady/unsafe neighborhood question. Like any major city there are indeed areas where you need to be careful about being during certain time periods of the day. You need to be smart about being with a group if you are out in 'questionable' areas but in general I believe the area is not as bad as the feeling most people may have who've never visited.
Also, I have been down for several visits and there is no "stench from Katrina" that I have ever found within general parts of New Orleans and/or near the campuses. If you are in hardest hit areas working on cleanup or rebuilding projects it may be a different story, but that wouldn't be unexpected.
