Tulane: Just a party school?

I'm currently looking into Tulane, despite many people telling me that it's simply a party school. So far, almost all of the people I know who applied there have SATs in the 1350 to 1500 range, GPAs above 3.7, and extracurriculars coming out the wazoo. Do you guys think that Tulane is more competitive than a lot of people give it credit for? Or is it possible that it's simply an Ivy League fall-back school?

I'm also quite curious about New Orleans; does anyone know the political climate down there? I know the South is notoriously very conservative, but New Orleans is supposed to be a hip, metropolitan area. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, it is definetely a good school. Look at the stats yourself-the average SAT is in the 1300s.

Tulane has increased in selectivity and popularity recently, and has always had a nice reputation for academics. People love to generalize Tulane as only being a party school, but I think that that reputation is due to its location. Of course, there's plenty of partiers, but not any more than other similarily ranked universities.

Also, most of the students are from the north. Very few are even from the south, much less NO. Emory is kinda like that too.

My daughter applied to Tulane via the personal app because it was free and minimal work. It was the last school on her list until she started investigating it more seriously. In addition to very good academics, I personally think the university is doing some cutting-edge kinds of programs such as a 5 1/2 year Masters program (essentially extending the 4 year BA degree/honors thesis). We would be extremely happy if my daughter received enough financial aid to be able to afford Tulane.
