Purely out of curiosity, for those that applied RD, what were your reasons for applying RD vs. EA?

@pishicaca I simply didnt have the time when ea was happening due to personal issues even though I really want to go. I wasn’t able to apply early anywhere
@llaauurenn Fallenchemist passed away - he was an absolute treasure trove of information about Tulane on this board. My son was accepted last year and attends Tulane. I’m wondering what non stat criteria may have gotten him accepted. One thing comes to mind is that beyond a great GPA and ACT and the usual NHS, etc. he was dual enrolled in college his senior year and has worked in addition to school and varsity sports since age 15. What non stat criteria do you believe affects Admissions here?
I had responded to @llaauurenn but it looks like it somehow got swallowed up in the thread cleanup . As an aside, not sure how DA is viewed by Tulane. Some colleges aren’t too bullish on it if they aren’t able to get a good feel for the quality of the school and coursework.
My son is weightisted RD round at Tulane with a 1540 SAT, 34 ACT, and a 4.0. He realizes now that he should have applied EA, ED, or ED II. His pride is pretty wounded, but I personally think that it’s a good lesson for him to learn. I do not feel sorry for him because I warned him that Tulane is huge on demonstrated interest, and applying early is a no-brainer way of showing that you are gung-ho about Tulane. I do want to clarify that Tulane was never a safety school for him. The Valedictorian at his high school didn’t get into Tulane a couple of years ago, so we knew this was not a given by any stretch of the imagination. I seriously would LOVE to see my son at my Alma Mater, and we are still HUGE Tulane fans!!!
I think Tulane’s biggest problem is that they are one of the last schools in their relative rankings range that gives a lot of merit aid. This generosity causes some applicants to take them for granted as they see that aid as weakness on Tulane’s part and assume that means they they will get in if they have good stats. Now that Tulane has become so selective(17% admit rate) they should probably tighten up on that aid and let those folks find a different school to call safety.
So for a different perspective/experience - we have loved the interaction with all depts at Tulane. Admissions were extremely friendly, very welcoming and we felt very professional compared to several other similar schools. I won’t name those but they are all in same circle of commonly applied to schools. My daughter was solid (3.95, 33 ACT, solid AP course load) but not spectacular. Throughout the process they communicated far better than most and actually hit their dates for releasing information. I understand the frustration and hope everyone ends up at their best fit. We have just enjoyed every step with Tulane and found them to be really committed to finding a great class. I do think they are nervous about over enrollling as they received more apps than ever before. Really felt like they didn’t want any missteps this year on admit numbers.
Waitlisted, like so many others I guess haha. Gonna deny because personally I have better options lined up.
@quadaces you know what a millennial would call you? Salty lol
Please stop chastising posters and stick to the topic so that the thread remains open.
My son was waitlisted yesterday. Honestly we were alittle surprised based on his scores ACT 36, top 1% in class, lots of service and leadership but sadly this was just not meant to be. Since he has other choices he decided to email the Tulane rep and asked to be taken off the wait list and hopefully that will benefit someone else in the coming months. The rep was very appreciative. Best of luck to all!
Not attacking or defending here…I hope everyone gets into the best school that is right for their child. I know it’s a stressful time for many…yours truly included. Seeing the bickering on this page just adds to the anxiety, IMHO. Peace out…and good luck to everyone…
The lack of transparency goes both ways, though. Neither the school nor the applicants want to show all their cards. Tulane is trying to craft a class by whatever parameters they’ve set. Applicants are looking for acceptances and aid, by their own parameters. I don’t think many kids would like to rank their choices up front to all schools.
Tulane is a great university. I think the bewilderment everyone is expressing is that everyone seems to be waitlisted. Now of course, not everyone who applied to Tulane is on this thread, however when results for schools come out, you typically see the 3 different decisions. We have only seen waitlisted. Its a bit odd. Whatever the reason, its great its not a rejection. I will say that although it was not a top choice for my daughter, there are many aspects about Tulane that made it attractive, free app or not, there is effort that has to go into filling out the app and $$ to request test scores and financial aid docs (idoc).
I think by applying to a school you are telling them that they are in the running and ranked in some form. So the student in a sense is being somewhat transparent. The student however is blind.
Its stressful times for sure! I think these boards help the kids to find validation in their angst. If they somehow need to get it out, and find someone who feels the same way, they feel better. I am okay with that.
The crazy thing is, in about a week, all of this will be a distant memory.
It’s not that only waitlist results are coming out, it’s just that those rejected don’t choose to post their rejection, which is one of the reasons this is not my favorite website. I’ve decided to be one of the few who admits I was, in fact, rejected admission to Tulane. 5.2 HPA, 1380 SAT, 15 APs, 3 leadership positions, 4 clubs and sports, AP and AICE diplomas, top 5% of class, wrote the optional why Tulane essay. The free app was a big pull for me applying and I never visited or sent in an audition tape, so I wasn’t expecting much. Congrats to everyone who got in!
@snavea Jeez, you’re a hard worker! Very impressive. I hope you’ve received other acceptances to schools you’re excited about.
@mrjsmom I’m thankful to say I have some great options. Thanks for your kind words and I hope you receive some good news from Tulane.
@snavea Thanks! We’re good. Lots of options. Thankful as well.
Hey everyone, since some of you guys seem to be a bit confused I thought I could help shed some light.
When I visited Tulane in October of this school year, the admissions councilor leading the information part of the tour said that they save few spots for regular decision, their reasoning being that if Tulane was a top choice, you would have gotten your application in for early action. They don’t want to waste acceptances on people who simply apply to tulane as a back up.
That being said, I have a 4.3 GPA/1450 SAT and was admitted early action. I was very nervous because last year someone from my school was denied with a 4.8 GPA/1570!!! SAT. I actually asked my admissions councilor about why that could have happened and they said they really value other aspects of the application. They like to see community service and people actually passionate about Tulane !!!(why tulane essay). Hope this helped, and you can’t get mad at a school for not accepting you if it was clear in your application you aren’t seriously considering Tulane.
