Tulane RD Thread Class of 2022

@kinithia http://tuadmissionjeff.blogspot.com/ read the one from march 19th

If they fill the class or over enroll they will take no one from the wait list, unless they have a big summer melt (people that decline over the summer because they got in off another waitlist, can’t pay, get ill, decide to take a gap year, have a family emergency, etc).

@jym626 “summer melt”…finally some new lingo on cc. =D>

@EHDAD- well, thanks, but its not new lingo. A quick look found posts from 10 years ago. Its a common term- the colleges use it.

@jym626 Well it’s new to me. And it’s a nice deviation from “yield protection”, which has been all anybody has wanted to discuss lately.

Happy to help, @EDHDAD >:D<

Are any of the late acceptances receiving merit? Curious how that works.

My D was waitlisted. Interesting to compare my two D’s experiences - may be helpful to future applicants. We did everything right for D1 & all wrong for D2.

D1 - GPA about 3.8 UW / SAT in high 1400s / 9 or 10 APs with 3s, 4s, 5s - we did a campus visit, she applied EA, and she submitted a video of her singing (she was planning a vocal performance major). She also applied for the Deans Honor / Paul Tulane scholarships although she didn’t receive one. Result - admitted with $25K per year merit.

D2 - GPA 3.8 UW / SAT 1540 / NMF / 9 APs - all 5s: no campus visit (although she did attend a couple of local events), applied EA but got bumped to RD because mom (hides face in shame) got her GC’s email address wrong on the app & the high school report didn’t arrive in time. No portfolio to submit. D did not submit DH/PT apps out of application weariness. Result - waitlisted.

So lesson learned - do a campus visit, apply EA, apply for the DH and PT even if only to show that you’re really interested. Have something a little extra to offer outside of academics. (And of course, have those stats!)

@GertrudeMcFuzz What were D1 and D2’s requested majors?

I don’t think they had to declare? I may be wrong. D1 would have declared vocal performance, D2 would have been undecided.

@GertrudeMcFuzz I was just wondering because some majors are tougher to get into than others. I think probably the thing that hurt your D2 the most was being in the regular decision pool.

I agree, and I would feel horrible except for the fact that once D failed to complete the DH/PT scholarship apps, the school fell out of financial reach for us & it was just a matter of curiosity whether or not she would be admitted.

Looks like extreme wait-listing is a national issue, not a purely Tulane phenomenon:

Putting 1,000s of kids on a wait-list seems bananas to me.

When can my parents apply for the Plus Loan? Is it too early now?

The takeaways from this are the 9% increase in applications—just under 39,000, the most selective status in admissions ever—17% (versus 21% last year), the higher yield of 29%—that means almost 1 out of every 3 students accepted chooses to attend Tulane. Just about 5 years ago I believe the yield was 22%, so that’s a big jump. A class size of just under 1,900. The average ACT is now in Ivy-league /elite school range of 32 and average Converted SAT is 1456 (although with the new ACT/SAT conversation tables coming out soon this may change the average SAT score), and 22% of students who are of color, which means greater diversity. The late FallenChemist, Tane’s biggest advocate on CC, had predicted this continued upswing as the school recovered from hurricane Katrina and as the school’s ranking in US News & World Report rose back to its place where it had been before Katrina. He must be smiling from up above. Roll Wave!

DS rejected yesterday, applied EA was deferred to RD, then waitlisted. 3.95 w gpa, 32 ACT, 6 AP’s (4’s & a 5), 4 years varsity sport/team captain. not many other EC’s. Did local interview in CA. Going to SDSU Weber Honors early admit so all good. Good luck to those still waitlisted!
