My daughter is looking to study here from next year. When I asked my American friend about this university he had never heard of it ? Does it have a good reputation ? (International mum we are also looking at George Washington).
Tulane has a strong reputation, and seems to be a school on the rise. Not an Ivy-equivalent or near-Ivy, but very strong. I think of it as in the category of Villanova, UCSB, Tufts, Lehigh, George Washington, Wisconsin, etc. Here are the USNW and WSJ rankings (for what they’re worth):

Hi, nervousmum. Is your daugher interested in specific majors? I ask because schools have different strengths. For example, GW is strong for politics and law, and has a decent medical school so health sciences are solid. Tulane is an excellent school for health sciences (pre-med, Public Health), biomedical engineering, has an business school as well as strengths in Poli Sci, History, English, Latin American studies. Tulane has an extremely service oriented study body, so if your D enjoys voluneering and being involved in community service, it’d be a good match. As Flyer Dad said, it’s on the rise. My D just finished her first year in the Honors program and LOVED Tulane. NOLA is a great city for students to explore. Tulane is one of the HOT schools right now with a 13% admit rate this year, so make sure she applies to a range of schools (that all might be equally academically rigorous but some easier to get into than others).
Does your daughter want to be in a city – hence interest in both NOLA and Washington? I suggest she look at like-oriented schools such as BU, NYU, Northwestern, too. Again, depending on what she’d like to study, some schools offer strengths and will guide her to a list to schools where she can pursue an interest. Each school has its own personality and some are more sports oriented, others more service oriented, etc.Hopefully you and your D have researched all aspects of the school/uni to see which ones would best match for her interests.
I disagree with the previous post in terms of categorization. Northwestern is ranked #10, tied with Dartmouth, and ahead of Brown and Cornell. Northwestern’s admit rate is 8.8%. The best comparables to Northwestern are Duke and Stanford (all three are in suburban locations, all 3 play in D1 athletic conferences, all 3 are almost exactly the same size). No knock on BU or NYU, but neither is even close to the same league as Northwestern. As for Tulane, I’d put it in the same category as USC, SMU, BU or GWU - essentially a party school that’s trying to re-shape itself as an academic powerhouse, but has a long way to go.
Your “American friend” who has never even heard of Tulane is not very well informed about colleges. Perhaps he only knows about the Sports Illustrated college rankings.
@DWM1967 just so you have the facts correct Brown’s total acceptance rate for 2023 was 6.6% and 4.8% regular decision. Also when referencing rankings you should include the following…
WSJ
1 Harvard
2 MIT
3 Yale
4 Columbia
5 Caltech
6 Stanford
7 Brown
7 Duke
9 Princeton
10 Penn
Forbes
1 Harvard
2) Yale
3) Stanford
4) MIT
5) Princeton
6) Caltech
7) Penn
8) Brown
9) Dartmouth
10) Duke
Not suggesting Northwestern isn’t in the same league…it is. Just hate to see that conclusion reached based on hyperbole, “rank shopping”, and erroneous info.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Let’s move on from the nth iteration of rankings, especially when they have nothing to do with Tulane.
I am from the NE in an affluent area where we send tons of kids to both Tufts and Tulane… Tufts has an infinitely better reputation.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Again, Tufts is not relevant to the OP’s question. Regardless, Joe Six-Pack in Medford has never heard of Tulane, and his counterpart in New Orleans has never heard of Tufts. The fact that people in the US or abroad have never heard of these fine institutions says more about their lack of knowledge that the universities’ reputation.
Tulane is a competitive school with a good reputation for both academics and student satisfaction. I would not let your friends lack of knowledge bother you. I actually find it a bit odd that an American would never have heard of it but I guess it’s possible. Tulane and GW are very different in location and campus feel so you should definitely research them.
Sorry, I disagree strongly. It is not “just a party school.” The quality of applicants Tulane is getting now has shifted dramatically. The stats are quite high. It is true that the vibe is not a stressed out vibe as many of the Ivies may be. I think it is much more of an academic powerhouse than BU and NYU.
Ironically, A Chinese rich kid applied to Tulane with a fraudulent HS transcript, and SHE WAS ADMITTED.
This report is backed by evidence of a video call recording. During the call, due to her indiscretion, this Chinese applicant(Yingxin “Rachel” Xue) disclosed the process of grade fabrication herself:
“Actually, it is no different than stealing the HS school seal. My mother came to a director in my HS school for help. The director of the school works in the office of academic affairs. The director agreed to help me in cheating, so I gave the transcript to him. He took it when no one was in the office. Then he secretly stamped it and took it out for me. THE GRADES LOOK GOOD, AND THEY WERE ALL MODIFIED BY MYSELF.”
The above is directly quoted from the translation of the recording, which has been certified and notarized to ensure accuracy. The subtitles were added verbatim according to the certified translation.
Yingxin unfairly takes her admission spot. Now Yingxin is a student in A. B. Freeman School of Business, Bachelor of Science in Management, majoring in Finance, and she is also a member of Delta Sigma Pi and Phi Sigma Pi at Tulane.
To verify her enrollment, You can also directly search “yingxin xue” at Tulane Phone Book (https://www2.tulane.edu/phonebook.cfm)
Hope this can also provide some reference regarding Tulane reputation.

Tulane is an upper tier school, which has a very good rep in the US, I would have no issues sending my child there, is it the right school for your child, no idea, it is one she and you should research, yes. 99% of schools in the US are party schools and one can do wonderful things at these schools with that or without partying.
