DD, a freshman, was just accepted into Tulane Scholars this past fall, and informed me that the program has been cancelled, even though she is currently taking a class that was required for the program. This honors program was only in its second or third year. I plan on speaking with her in the next few days to find out what more she knows.
Are you sure Top Scholars was eliminated?
I think Louisiana Tops is what she means. The state of Louisiana is having budget problems from the current low price of oil and is having problems funding their tops program . Tulane President Fitts, “View from Gibson discussed that today.”
Tops is a state funded tuition program for students from Louisiana. Louisiana residents can get tuition paid at a state school or the same money granted to a private Louisiana university like Tulane.
TOPS is not related to the now-defunct Tulane Scholars program, which has just been removed from the Tulane Honors webpage.
OK, don’t panic everyone. I have direct information on this. The NAME Tulane Scholars is being eliminated, the entire Honors Program is being transformed to be what is currently Tulane Scholars. I will post a new thread that details this tomorrow. @Bigmacattack @X22011
I think you will agree when you see the details that it is a very positive move, and your D will not be negatively affected in any way, Bigmacattack.
So just want to emphasize DON"T PANIC. It is in name only that it is gone; in fact they have beefed it up just a bit more with this increased focus, which is what it is. As you will learn in my thread tomorrow (it will take me some time to write it up), President Fitts considers this program a priority for the kind of direction he wants to see Tulane take.
I wonder if President Fitts is aware that there are wonderful students with 4.0 averages who would love to be a member of the Scholars program but are for reasons that we cannot understand left out?
