Tulane Students Offer to Answer Questions

@ReilyRocks are you in the Creative Med Scholars program (I’m not sure if that is the exact name of the program). IIf you are majoring in Neuroscience, I’m guessing you are not, but just curious if you know a lot of people in this program. Do the Pre-Med students tend to hang out together?

Sorry about the delay in my response! I am not in the Creative Premedical Scholars program, but it is a fantastic way to get automatic acceptance into Tulane medical school without having to take the MCAT (you just have to complete the pre-med reqs in two years instead of three, and you have to write an honors thesis and major in a liberal arts field). I’m double majoring in Nuero and Sociology, and with all of the extracurricular programs I was involved in, I decided not to do the program because I wanted to be able to stretch the classes I had to take over three years instead of two.
The pre-med students are a close group, and in both the creative scholars and normal track pre-health programs, students are supportive of each other. As you all take General Chem, Organic Chem, etc., there’s lots of study groups/opportunities for help.

I am a international student with high stats who is thinking about applying ED to Tulane but I am afraid of the financial aid.
I can only pay 1000$ per year so is there any chance for me to be accepted with almost a full-ride scholarship (full tuition, fees, room, and board)?
@HazelnutorFootball

Is it more likely to be rejected EA or deferred?

I know someone that had to transfer from Tulane bc she found it very cliquey, do you see that happening often?

@pfdgjb
Generally speaking, for Tulane and for most other universities, we strongly recommend against applying Early Decision if finances are a concern. Early Decision is a binding option, so students who ED are saying they are committed to coming to Tulane regardless of the financial package that they receive. However, Early Action is our other early option, where you apply early and hear back early, but there is no binding element to it.

As far as scholarships go, there are tons of scholarship opportunities for International Students. They are eligible for all scholarships that domestic applicants are eligible for in addition to scholarships that are exclusively to international students. Two scholarships that international students are eligible for (Paul Tulane and Dean’s Honor) are full tuition scholarships. Tulane also offers up to $23,000 in need-based financial aid for international students who qualify. You can find tons of information on International Scholarships at https://admission.tulane.edu/international/aid.

@bleedorangebaby I believe it is much more common for students to be deferred rather than rejected. However, decisions can vary year by year based on the applicant pool

While I can’t speak to everyone’s experience, I have never found Tulane to be cliquey. I’ve always felt welcomed by every group I’ve interacted with on campus, and have friends from such a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and personalities! However, I can totally understand the concern of finding your “niche” of people, because that take time at any school that you go to. While Tulane has been the perfect fit for me, and I do think Tulane is the right fit for a lot of different types of people, no school is perfect for everybody.

Do you the difference in acceptance rate between EA and ED? My D19 is considering applying ED but she has been all over the place in what she wants in a school over the past year. She’s convinced it is the right school for her but I also have hesitations mostly because of the distance from home. She’s worried applying EA will significantly reduce her chance of being accepted.

Most other universities abide by the College Board ethics directive on ED (https://professionals.collegeboard.org/guidance/applications/ethics): “Should a student who applies for financial aid not be offered an award that makes attendance possible, the student may decline the offer of admission and be released from the Early Decision commitment.”

@pfdgjb -Tulane claims to offer up to $23,000 per year in need-based financial aid to qualified international students. So if you require a full-ride scholarship (or close to it), you would have to apply for one of the top merit scholarships (Paul Tulane Award, Deans’ Honor Scholarship, Stamps Leadership Award). More info on these here: https://admission.tulane.edu/tuition-aid/merit-scholarships

The Paul Tulane Award and the DHS are full-tuition. The Stamps Scholarship is full cost-of-attendance. These all require a separate application but are worth doing if your stats are VERY high. If you are counting on merit aid to make Tulane affordable, you should apply via non-binding Early Action and not via binding Early Decision since the winners of these big scholarships aren’t announced until March. Good luck!

@vonlost- Note that the reply that you quoted was in response to an international student who is considering ED but can only pay $1,0000/year. Since the reply explained that grants for international students go up to just $23K per year, this applicant would need to receive one of the major merit scholarships in order to enroll, and those scholarships won’t be announced until spring. Thus, ED would be a bad idea for this student (as I’d already explained to him/her in another thread!)

It’s common for students --especially international students–to apply ED (not just to Tulane but to many schools with good merit money) in order to get a significant admissions-odds boost, even though they know they can’t matriculate without big merit bucks–which won’t be awarded until months later.

So I think that the warning against applying ED when finances are a worry was specifically for students who already know in advance of the application that they won’t be given enough funding to attend without waiting until March when the top merit awards are handed out.

On the other hand, when a student applies ED to Tulane in good faith-- with the belief that he or she will receive adequate need-based aid–but then doesn’t, the student CAN withdraw from the ED commitment without penality, just as you’ve cited.

But students should NOT apply ED to Tulane (or anywhere) knowing that any need-based aid they receive will definitely not be sufficient and thus with the hope that merit money, awarded down the road, will bridge the gap.

Recently admitted transfer student here. Can anyone tell me what the finaid situation is like? I should be finding out in a few days. I hear very conflicting things about the school’s financial aid. Some people say it’s notoriously stingy, other people say it’s great. I’m in a weird situation, my parents make decent money but they struggle financially. My EFC is sub 3000. I got a merit award for 16k a year already luckily.

But can anyone give me an idea of what to expect?

@Anco17 Financial aid is a process that can look completely different for every family. If you have gotten all of your documents in to them, the best thing that you can do is just wait until you hear back from them. If you do have any financial aid related questions, you should reach out to the Financial Aid Office directly because they are working closely with your family’s package and would know best

What’s the name given to Tulane Students? e.g. UPenn students are called Quakers. What about Tulane students?

I’ve heard “Tulanians” and “Greenies,” but we don’t usually refer to each other as either. It’s more common to say “Roll Wave.” Not sure if Hazelnutor’s experience has been different!

Hi! I applied ED and I heard people actually find out before Dec 15. Is that true?
also, is it possible to get into TU with low stats but have so much interest/dedication towards the school?

Hi! I am currently a freshman at Tulane majoring in undeclared business. If you have any questions about Tulane or little tips/ tricks to the admissions process, I’d be more than happy to help.

ED students will hear back on November 19th. And define “low stats.” Tulane does take demonstrated interest very seriously and that certainly helps, but you also need to be in the range of scores and GPA too @Joedibrown

@Confringo I’d say “Tulanians” or saying “the Green Wave” is the most common!
