Hello!

I'm almost definitely going to enroll in Tulane (but I'm still sort of considering NYU until I visit NOLA next week). My interests are very diverse which is making it difficult to choose what I want to study. However, I'd say I'm most passionate about the arts so I've been considering major in one or two of the following (and maybe minoring in one too):

Film Studies
Digital media production
Music (general music or composition, not sure which yet)
Music science and technology

What are these programs like? Do you have any advice or suggestions? Would I be better off majoring in something like engineering physics or architecture? This may/may not be a difficult question to answer, sorry lol. I love all of these, but I haven't heard much about the reputation of the programs. I'm grateful for any input, thanks!

I have virtually no input into this other than to say architecture is a very focused commitment. It is also a 5 year program at Tulane, they only offer the M.Arch. track. So you really want to be sure that is what you want. Having said that, I am sure there are ways you can explore it for a semester and still change if you see it isn’t for you. You should talk to the architecture department if this really is a consideration as a major.

Otherwise it is up to others to fill you in on the particulars of the programs, I don’t know much about those you name.

Thank you for the insight, fallenchemist. I’ll keep your comments in mind! I too have heard that architecture is a pretty intense program at Tulane…

I have nothing much to add, because I don’t know either, but I’m also extremely curious about the film department. I know that Tulane has a wonderful history department, which is my other main interest, but I’d love to hear what people have to say about media studies!

I didn’t think to mention this before, and it may or may not be significant, but apparently there are movies being made in New Orleans on a pretty regular basis. There was one shot on campus last month.

That’s great to know! I’ll try to find out as much as I can about the film/media department when I visit next week.
