@Cheneyyu Outside of NOLA, LA isn’t liberal at all; it’s the kind of state where people still sing “Dixie.”
NOLA and Tulane, however, are pretty liberal. There are racists and bigots everywhere, but most people in NOLA aren’t.

@cheneyyu. While Louisiana state is mostly conservative, the city of New Orleans is very liberal, very diverse and accepting. Orleans Parish voted over 80% for Clinton.
@Cheneyyu the Paul Tulane award is going to look very closely at your academics and typically those who receive it are in impeccable academic standing as well as have great stand alone essays to the responses. The Tulane alumni network is definitely not limited to the South as there are major alumni groups in every city. I spent the summer in Los Angeles and was able to meet with a lot of alum during my time there. There are a plethora of internship opportunities in NOLA both paid and unpaid available to students.
The political atmosphere at Tulane is majority liberal, but there are also conservatives. The NOLA area as well is largely liberal despite being in the conservative states.
@TulaneMaddie22 how can they know the top 10% of applicants now before they even received all of the applications? Is there a certain cutoff? My D got the premier scholarship but no invitation. She has amazing stats so I am hoping it was an egregious mistake.
@greeny8 it’s based off the recalculated GPA (so all core courses not any electives) and test scores.
When you talk about top 10% of applicants how do you account for different rigor of HSs – for example, a very selective private school with a lower grading curve v another school where many students have straight As.
@alltoomuch admission decisions always take into consider what a high school offers. They would not count it against an applicant for not taking any APs if their high school does not offer APs. So to answer your question, the ‘rigor’ of an applicant depends on what their high school offers and how they are taking advantage of it.
I guess what I am trying to get my head around is how do they determine who is in the top 10% of their applicant pool?
Must have a subjective component.
My D emailed her AO to see if there was an error. It doesn’t make sense, she has straight A’S, 13 AP etc etc
@TulaneMaddie22, When you get a chance, may you please PM me?
Hi- can you take a TIDES course both first and second semester of freshman year?
If you are in the Business School, you are required to take TIDES both semesters…
Students enrolled in the A.B. Freeman School of Business are REQUIRED to enroll in either the More Than Just Business TIDES or the Law & Order TIDES classes during the Fall Semester and the More Than Just Business TIDES in the Spring Semester. StudentsNOT enrolled in the School of Business are welcome to take either of the TIDES offered from A.B. Freeman School of Business for just the Fall Semester or the full academic year.
So then if you are in the honors program and business school what happens? It sounds like there is a mandatory honors tides. Thank you btw.
hmmm… I think that we will need @TulaneMaddie22 to answer that one…
@jozuko @skeptile To answer y’alls question the student would have to discuss with their academic advisor to decide which TIDES to take.
@skeptile You cannot unless it is the BTIDES which lasts the entire year. Otherwise freshmen only take a TIDES during the fall semester.
@greeny8 @alltoomuch I just wanted to clarify there is not a strict cut off at the top 10% for honors like many other institutions do. I more just said top 10% to give y’all an idea about the portion of admitted students who are admitted into the honors program.
Do you have to be enrolled in the Business School in order to take the business school required TIDES classes? What if you are undeclared but want to keep business open as an option so want to take the recommended courses for freshman put out by the Bschool?
Thanks for answering our questions. I just have a few. How busy is the rec center usually? What are the most popular sports? Are there typically enough people for pick-up games?
@valletta my son is a Poli Sci major and took the B-Tides course.
