Tulane vs IU Kelley vs. UMD vs U MIami (FL)

My daughter has been accepted to the above schools, all with mostly decent merit $ except for UMD. While she still hasn’t heard from 4 other schools and has ruled out a few other acceptances, these have been her top 4 for a long time (Tulane has been at the top but it was slight reach for her bc of ACT score, composite, not super score so she was ecstatic when she got in EA) - but now she’s conflicted as they all offers pros/cons. Says she wants sports, sorority, great business school, city nearby or cool college town, and all of these offer variations…weather doesn’t matter (we live on west coast).
She has been accepted into all of their business schools which was a big factor. We’ve visited all except U Miami and trying to go there and re-visit the others in next 2 months on admitted student/red carpet days. She’s in all the group me chats etc…at IU she’s also in the honors college. Her first cousin goes to UMD. Any personal insight into these schools, especially business students would be appreciated.

Congrats all excellent choices. IU Kelley is probably the best business school. Kelley will be high on our list next year so will be anxious to hear what others have to say. Good luck.

I know it would be best to hear from business majors at those schools, but it might also help to look at the Rate My Professors website. Look up some professors in each school for some of the business courses your daughter is likely to take. If you do some more visits, allow enough time to sit in on several lectures. I can’t tell you the time we wasted on tours walking from building to building, and then ended up still knowing little about the quality of teaching. Some colleges have classes you can view online, which really gives you a feel of the place.

DS is freshman at IU- was also accepted to UMD and U Miami- picked Kelley because the business school was the highest ranked of the three. He loves it and feels that so far he is getting a great education. Feel free to message any questions.

All fine choices. Congrats. My only comment is that I would not pick a college based on Rate my Professors as was suggested above.

@babysweetpea My son was admitted to U Miami EA – we are also West Coast (San Diego). He really loves UM as it has a very similar vibe to USC – former party school turned academic – but still laid back & approachable, with big time sports (& big time music/arts scene, if your D is into that). It also has a pretty active Greek scene, if that’s her thing. Sororities don’t rush til Jan, which is good because you get acclimated in school for a semester & already will have made friends by the time rush comes around. Miami is not really a college town, but is a vibrant & eclectic city with Latin flair. The campus itself looks like a mixture of Tomorrowland meets Palm Springs Art Deco, with some shady streets & Spanish Moss thrown in to remind you that you are in the South.

My S is not a business student, so can’t advise you on the programs, etc., but obviously internships & job placements after graduation should be researched.

Lastly, parchment.com is an interesting site that has a college match up. In other words, where did students who got into those 4 schools end up? (You have to search them one v one, but you can make a 4x4 chart). These results are not for business programs, though, just for overall universities. That being said, Tulane beats all of them (in percentage of students who picked Tulane over those other 3 schools), esp. vs UM & IU. In fact UI, comes out last. Take it all with a grain of salt… Good luck with your decision!

I would pick IU out of the three, with the caveat that Bloomington is not close to the Indy airport and is a little bit of a haul. That being said, plenty of kids go back and forth with no problems. Bloomington is not big but it is a cute college town and charming.

We just moved away from south Florida and never even looked at UM. Our son is STEM though.

Tulane would be my #2, with the added bonus that it’s not quite as far away from home for you.
