So I was admitted to both Tulane and NYU, and I am having a lot of trouble deciding between the two schools. Specifically, I would be entering Gallatin, the school of individualized study, at NYU. I want to study neuroscience and marketing, and at both schools I can do that, because Tulane lets students major within different colleges at the same time. I am confused and there are pros and cons about each; any opinions and/or suggestions would be awesome!
I am familiar with both. While Tulane can be considered an urban campus, it is not nearly as urban as NYU. Tulane will definitely give you more of an “I’m at college” and on a campus" feel. If that is important to you, I would go to Tulane. If you want the feel of a very large city, albeit in Greenwich Village, which is unique unto itself, I would go NYU. NYU is very, very liberal. I don’t know if that’s a plus or minus for you. Tulane is less politically charged, but also leans left, like most college campuses. Academically, the student bodies are of very similar caliber. Tulane is a libit more generous with financial aid so you’ll have a more socioeconomically diverse student body. Both have the full gamut of professional and graduate schools and enjoy the cross-fertilization of programs and ideas that go along with those resources. Tulane’s president has really emphasized its interdisciplinary study opportunities, so you can be very flexible with your major at Tulane. 70% of Tulane students double-major. Community service is also a requirement at Tulane for graduation, so if you want to be very immersed in the city in which you study, you will get definitely get that at Tulane. I gather there is no shortage of opportunities to work with nonprofits in New York City either.
In the end, it is a matter of personal choice. You can’t go wrong with either of the schools. Both are well respected and will prepare you well for the next phase of your education. If you are blessed enough to have the opportunity to visit both campuses, I would urge you to do so so you can get a feel for them. Best of luck to you!
