Did anybody else get an email from Tulane that was intended for guidance counselors? My son and several of his friends who have already been accepted go it.

It basically said that the number of applicants have nearly doubled from last year and that they have to set higher academic standards for the RD applicants. I suppose it was a heads up for GC's to prepare them when some students don't get in.

Apparently my son's friends got a follow up email saying that the email was not intended for them, but for guidance.

I'm maleah's mom... yep. We got it. It was a little scary at first! Thought they were trying to change their mind! Got the second one too. Very interesting, huh? Do you think it was really accidental? It certainly seems like a way to persuade those who haven't yet made the final decision that TU is growing in prestige, selectivity etc. :)

Yes, received the emails. I sincerely doubt it was purposeful - and the information is accurate. According to Pres. Cowen, there were 33,700 applications received this year!! That's a 62% increase over last years 20,756 applications (this # is from US News and World Report). That is a HUGE increase! There is a thread in the parents forum about the increase in applications across all colleges. Until Tulane's numbers came out, I believe Vandy was leading the pack with a 30% increase (40% increase in ED applications). If Tulane accepts about the same number of students as last year, anticipating about a 19-20% yield, the acceptance percent drops from 37.7% down to 23.2%. It is a different world this year in college admissions land!!

Yeah I got that email. Seems like something they should be telling admitted students anyways. But yeah, if they got near double the applications I'm guessing the acceptance rate will be somewhere between 20-25%. I feel fortunate for applying so early and getting my acceptance in September.

they're still selling. I'm sure a very small proportion of acceptees have obligated themselves to Tulane...and call me a skeptic...I think the "accidential" e-mail was another ingenius selling tool (along with the personal apps, generous merit money, and super-quick replys). What purpose did it have going to guidance counselors? Application deadlne has passed. It went to both of my parents e-mails. How can you get the (what) 300-person long guidance counselor e-mail list confused with the 6000 name applicant e-mail list? What a great way to sell to all of these pensive acceptees 'Tulane is not the Tulane of Yesteryear....you'd be lucky if you slipped in before we realized how popular we'd be...I think the panic that ensued from the "mistaken" e-mail was unplanned.

The e-mail was kind of odd. When I first started reading it, it seemed like there was good information that would be intended for guidance counselors only. The more of it I read, the more it sounded like a typical letter to convince an accepted student to attend and congratulate him/her on being such a strong applicant in such a strong pool. There's definitely a good chance it was accidentally on purpose, but it was interesting to receive either way.

whew! I'm sure a lot of people are glad right about now that they got in.

On a closer look, the accidental nature of this email seems suspicious, but I doubt the college would outright lie to thousands of potential students.

my family is good friends with a state senator in Louisiana and I told him about the new email last night so he's gonna get a letter of rec down there this week he said....so I'm hoping that will balance out my academics and let me get in

I thought the fact that they would send the letter out to anyone even guidance counselors was a little alarming. It basically said they were looking at the numbers more than the person when it came to admitting them. Well that is the way it came off to me. And it made me wonder if I wanted to go to a school that was only concerned with my SATs and GPA. Before I got the email I was under the impression that Tulane read everything they got from you (my admission rep told me this), but now I am not so sure they even looked at my resume. I dunno maybe I am being too critical, but intentional or unintentional the letter was a turn-off for me.
