I read this WaPo article earlier this week and saw a story along the same lines on one of the evening newscasts. It makes good points for abandoning DST. Honestly, while I love having the extra hour of daylight, I mostly just want to quit switching back and forth.
My MD daughter is working a 24 hr shift, 6 am to 6 am. She didn’t realize it’s really a 25!
Mine too…but mine is 11 hours instead if 10. Still…it’s an added hour.
My H always hates to be on call when the clocks change back from daylight savings time as he’s on call an extra hour. And it seems he’s never on call when they spring forward to lose an hour. Life is so unfair
If I recall correctly, there is a higher rate of vehicular accidents on the first business day after the fall time change back to Standard Time. I would post some proof, but when I google it, all I get are links to plaintiff car accident lawyers saying the same thing!
I do recall when I first started driving (ages ago) about being surprised at how dark it was when I was on the road in the afternoon.
Be careful!
I dont have strong feelings about the time change. I barely notice it. But I dont have a dog or a morning job. Long winter nights don’t bother me either. That’s why cats, books and gas fires were invented.
I’m actually extra glad to be retired when the clocks change. I was part of big worldwide software/systems support team, and there were extra weekend checks to be done on clock change weekends… a few of them, since different countries have different switch dates. Also meant some “regular time” weekend meeting times could shift.
I am usually fine with the time change through December because I love Christmas but I loathe January and February. I bought a “happy light” last year and it did help. I work in a windowless classroom and just putting the light on when I get to school at 7:15 for about 30 minutes did help me not feel like crap all of the time.
Except in the Navajo Nation parts, which do use daylight time.
Hawaii does not use daylight time.
The territories of American Samoa, Guam, CNMI, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands also do not use daylight time.
There was an incident years (decades?) ago when a police officer on duty fell asleep while driving and hit a bicyclist. One contributing factor was that the shift scheduling did not account for the “loss” of an hour during the switch to daylight time the night before, so the officer in question inadvertently got a schedule that did not meet the required rest time between shifts.
I’m team Daylight Savings Time year round here, but the switch doesn’t bother me that much. I just like more light in the evenings. Not a morning person anyway so don’t care about sunrise.
The time changes don’t bother me, because I don’t have a time schedule on Sundays anymore. I do appreciate getting an extra hour! But I prefer daylight in the evenings, otherwise it feels like it’s time to go to bed when I get home from work. But I loathe the summer heat and humidity, so if dark evenings mean the hellish season is over, bring it on! Winter is the only season where my body feels good. Everything is dead and I can breathe again.
Every single clock in my house has a different time. My iPad and phone supposedly are on auto correct time…but supposedly so is my watch. They all fell back…but not to the same minutes in the hour. And DH did all the other clocks…and they are all different.
Can’t wait to do my car🙄
My H has been seeing a sleep therapist, and he has had great progress in being able to get back to sleep when he wakes up during the night. The time change will be a challenge for him for awhile. He was way too antsy this morning - he’s been working outside for hours!
I heard part of an interview with her on NPR the other morning, but then had to get out of the car to go to work. I’m biased because I’m a morning runner and would rather have morning light. We also just moved to the extreme end of a time zone, and it exaggerated my morning light running issue. I’ve adjusted to dark running, but that sad tragedy with the Memphis runner’s murder reminded me that it’s not without risks (cars for the most part, but crime too).
I like “falling back”. I hate springing forward. I love the extra hour of sleep. I walk my dog in the morning and dislike walking in the dark (I don’t like running into coyotes, skunks or possums).
I prefer having 5 instead of 6 time zones separating us from east coast and only 2 from west coast. It makes it easier to connect without as many zone hassles.
This is a little nitpicky, but I have seen several folks on my Facebook feed complain about turning the clocks back and how it gets dark earlier in the evening now and then say “I hate Daylight Savings Time”. I’m like you’ve got that backwards there, but I’m just complaining here instead of on their posts because I don’t want to be that friend.
I woke up at freaking 7:14 on Sunday. So much for getting some extra sleep. lol
