Turning down Chicago for ...

"Cornell is beautiful, and the suicide thing is a myth- the suicide rate is lower than the national average, and lower than many of Cornell's peer institutions, like MIT."

Cornell as MIT's peer?

Coquettish,
Exactly.

For engineering, sure! It's closer to MIT than the other Ivies, at least.

Yale. Simply because Chicago's FinAid office sucks!

choosing Duke, but Chicago gave me a helluva financial aid package

WashU-full tuition schol.+1K/Year

Anyone turning it down who got full tuition? Would Chicago redistribute the funds to someone who accepted?

Also, I got into Harvard. Chicago is not neccesarily the "place for ivy rejects". I just have a hard time supporting the snobbery Cambridge possesses, whether or not they have the stuff to back it up with.

Is that really the name of your town? Bigfork? :D

For shure (jk). Whenever someone asks, I reply with 'as in the large eating utensil".

i think that whoever started this thread did so just to push the uchi hardcores over the cliff. these people are sensitive enough without having people tell them they would choose boston university over uchi.

Iunno BlacknBlue... I knew when I started this whole process that MIT was a reach for me (you even pointed that out at my request), and I would be perfectly happy at UChic, but the cards played in my favor.

It's not like UChic is a bad school. In much the same way that students should not take rejections from colleges personally, alums should do the same for students rejecting their college. The sooner they do that, the better off this forum will be.

Honestly, I don't think this thread was started with bad intentions, but you can read them into anything, depending on your perspective. As an applicant, I don't see UChic as a bad school, it's just that MIT has more to offer me personally (both in terms of resources, culture, as well as financially).

EDIT: I should probably clarify that since the beginning of this whole process, I feel BlacknBlue has made more sense than most of the posters on this forum.

Princeton 2010 :)!

Wharton 2010...for a biz guy, there's really a clear winner, unfortunately. Pity...I prefer Chicago for everything except jobs.

wait does that mean the success of obtaining a job after graduating from uchic is low?

Not at all. Depends on the type of job. But for consulting and banking, Wharton is a monster. It's unbeatable at the undergraduate level. Plus, Chicago's alumni network is not the size of Wharton's.

It just feels like Wharton is better at getting my foot in the door for me. Doable from Chicago, but easier at Wharton.

ohh i c. thanks megalo
wow you have the same exact birthday as my friend. (random)

I think it varies based on when they get a job. I think I read something like 80% of Chicago students go on to get graduate degrees. It's known as the teacher of teachers for good reason. ;)

olo: thank you for your kind words. from the bulk of the responses i get on the uchi forum, i would say that you are in the minority. congrats on MIT, you don't have to explain why you would choose MIT over uchi. it is not a slight to uchi that you would choose MIT over uchi. noone would choose uchi over MIT, why should you?. that last sentence will bring an avalanche of responses that uchi has, was and will always be their number 1 choice. in each instance, that statement will be true...because they couldn't get into MIT. everyone who attends uchi should stand tall. i've never met anyone who hasn't heard of uchi and who hasn't said "wow, great school' when uchi comes up in conversation, yet, this uchi forum, as more and more of you are starting to realize, is filled with the most sensitive ego fragile residents on cc.

^
No, that honor goes to the HYP'ers, I'm afraid. Their squabbles never end.

I completely agree with your post except maybe the part about Chicago students not being able to get in at MIT. Don't forget chicagonobel (rejected EA at Chicago), who ended up at Stanford.
