I’ve unofficially tutored students (mainly freshman) over the years for no cost; just because I like to help people in subjects I’m really good at and enjoy. I’ve done this all 4 years of high school, but since it is not “official” by school standards, does it still count? I consider it valuable because it taught me how much I love talking and teaching others about history, because that’s usually what I tutored in.
It counts. Does anyone else know about it? Your teachers?
@“Erin’s Dad” no, i never told any of the teachers because i thought i would get in trouble for it because they have “official tutoring” that costs money.
How about your parents?
Yes, it counts. You can even write one of your personal statements about it
@“Erin’s Dad” yeah, my parents know i’ve been tutoring kids throughout highschool. Why?
@uclahopefull nice, thank you for your response :). Planning on writing an extracurricular essay about it.
Some colleges give you the option of uploading additional recommendations beyond the Common App ones. People sometimes use those for recommendations from employers, coaches, etc. You might use that opportunity to get a testimonial from a parent whose kid you helped.
Also, if your free tutoring was offered to students whose families couldn’t afford (or didn’t want to pay for) the official tutoring, you might look for a graceful way to say that…without appearing to dis your school of course.
@Otterma that’s a great idea for a reccomendation, actually, thanks!
