This might just be me being paranoid but does college care if I watch tv shows online using their Internet. I don't do it often and I never download anything just stream. I was just wondering if it is something I could get in trouble for doing.

That and social networking are what most people seem to be doing in the library these days anyway.

Nope. University internet is only to be used for academic pursuits. If ya stream videos you could see some disciplinary action. Don’t go down that route!

So long as it’s legal, you’re fine. Torrenting they might take action on… watching tv, no one cares.

I’ve never gotten in trouble for streaming anything illegitimately (those non-official sites) but some schools are stricter than others. More likely than not you’ll get in trouble for torrenting, though.

Thanks for all the replies

If anyone else has any knowledge or opinions I would really appreciate it

I stream Netflix/Hulu everyday and probably download about 10gb a week, no complaints

Well I am talking about other less legit websites like project free tv.com

There was a bandwidth limit when I lived in the dorms my freshman year. That would be the only thing you have to worry about if what you’re doing is legal.

And if you’re doing something illegal, do it through a VPN.

I think the bigger issue is that you’re doing something illegal, and you are aware it’s wrong. You are just worried about getting caught. How is this any different than cheating on a test, and hoping you don’t get caught? Except, of course, this could land you in prison.

And my school monitors wifi activity pretty heavily.

But is it even illegal? I thought it was only illegal to download and upload copyrighted content.

Bumpbumpbump

Your university will/should give you a list of rules concerning internet use when they tell you how to log on/create an account. As far as I know, it’s not illegal to watch online, just to download- but take that with a grain of salt and do your own research.

I steam movies all the time from letmewatchthis, etc. I have never gotten in trouble. The people that have gotten in trouble are those that torrent things, and I have known people who got caught for that. At my school, even then it was kind of a slap on the wrist (don’t know any second time offenders).
