tv tuners ?

any of you have one ? how good is the picture quality, how much do they cost, and is there a special one for macs ? thanks ;]

My dad bought one for me made by Monster for the TV. The guys at Good Guys said with a conditioner, the picture quality is near HDTV quality. I believe the thing was 49 dollars.

are there cable hookups in our rooms that i can connect to the tuner? or is cable only available in a lounge where lots of people can watch?

No cable is available in all rooms.

I wouldn't say anywhere near HDTV, but they're not bad... (unless of course, you buy an HDTV tuner card, which would obviously be HDTV quality).
* downside to hdtv tuner : you need a fairly large antenna usually, your roommate may be kindof ****ed.

TV tuners just receive TV signals. It's the same picture quality as you would receive on a normal TV.

The difference is if you want PVR (Personal Video Recorder e.g. TiVo) and the lag between signal to picture (important if you want to hook up a video game console).

HDTV tuners exists but they only capture a certain signal which renders them kind of useless.

And finally, sales persons will say anything to make you buy it. Not sure what they mean by a 'conditioner' but it's most likely nothing more than a hardware encoder that's applying some filters to the picture.

i was thinking about bittorrent to download tv shows, but I don't want to get in trouble or anything. Is it safe to use? any of you guys use it?

I doubt you'll end up doing it, pinkearmufs. I doubt you'll be watching the amount of tv you do now (coming from me, someone who watches a whole lot more tv than is healthy).

But if you really want to download, I doubt itll be a big deal. Downloading tv is kindof in the grey area... its not strictly illegal like stealing music or movies, and I dont think anyone has been sued for "stealing" a show which was aired for free in the first place.

The bigger problem you'd have is the 5GB/week maximum. If you stay under there, you'll probably be fine.

You're right hehe the only show I'll bother to download is Lost. what a great show ;)

I never actually got into lost. I'm glad though:

Ive never had as much fun watching a show every week as I have going on a binge for like 2 weeks and watching a whole season at once.

The only show I love to see is The Wire, I can never wait for it to come out on DVD. The fourth season probably wont air for another 6 months to a year so I'm not worrying yet. Sopranos may start in January 2006, but Im not holding my breath for that either (I dont think they were ever on time for a season since they started).

the Sopranos were actually filming in my town the other day. It was some wedding scene.

Thats awesome. Although, if you know any more, please dont tell me.
I was seriously angry around the end of Friends, when they announced Drea de Matteo would be playing Joey's sister in the spinoff.

Didn't take much of an imagination to figure out what would happen to Adriana (her character for anyone who doesnt watch Sopranos) in the fifth season...
