Two languages, first semester - good idea?

If I can work all the scheduling out, I was hoping to take two introductory language courses during my first semester at Midd. Good idea, or too much? Should I explore other subjects before committing two out of four classes to language learning? It'd be Arabic and French, if that makes any difference.

I don’t recommend it. Start with Arabic and see where it goes. You can get excellent french instruction anywhere-including your semester in a North African/MiddleEastern country. Arabic will be more difficult and in the post 911 world, more useful.

My #1 S says: go for it if you are a language person, but he would take a broader distribution to see what else you may fall in love with. He took Chinese, Physics, a seminar on Islam, and a comparative politics course his first semester. He is now a double major Econ/Poli Sci.
My #2 (China Boy) says: NO! Just one is enough! He took Chinese, Chemistry, a dance class, and an intro econ course his first semester…He is now an International Studies/Asia major…

I have to agree with OBD. This seems like a bad idea.

That makes sense. I’m registering my top FYS tomorrow and I’ve planned around just taking Arabic, and waiting a little while to take French. I already took a few years of French in high school so it would definitely be easier to catch up in my sophomore or junior year. Thanks for the input!
